Wartime style: Michigan eradicates barberry to curb stem rust
Michigan small grain farmers lost little to stem rust last year thanks to federal action. The barberry eradication program by the plant pest control branch of the U S Department of Agriculture has removed about 501 square miles in 29 counties, destroying 2 994 barberry bushes in 73 new locations and at 211 previously infested sites. The Michigan branch, led by Maurice Turner in Lansing, works with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Michigan State University. More than 60 million susceptible barberry bushes have been destroyed on about 19 000 properties in Michigan. Since 1918 the project reduced annual stem rust losses to less than 212 000 bushels from 1 5 million, saving more than the project’s cost. Further work and resistant varieties could cut losses more, Turner said, noting 1 816 square miles remain to be treated.
