Conservation Dept. suspends rubbish burning permits
The Conservation Dept. shuts all brush and rubbish burning permits across northern Michigan due to rising forest fire danger from continued dry weather. Last week 533 acres burned in the upper peninsula and 145 in the lower peninsula. A notable blaze occurred along highway M-55 near St. Helen in Roscommon County when an abandoned car ignited, its reverse gear left running caused wiring to spark and a backfire into nearby trees.
