Several Taken for Violating Traffic Laws

Clare County Raises Funds for American Cancer Society Drive

Clare County Unit of the American Cancer Society reports a successful fundraising week. Totals include Clare City 1014.49 and Barrison 171.18, with part of the proceeds staying in county for education and service. DeMolay Family Night Plans Amid Detroit Trip

DeMolay members announce Family Nite this Friday with dinner at 6 30 in the Masonic Temple. Earlier they toured Briggs Stadium to see the Tigers vs Browns and attended the State Convention in Detroit. Detroit resident Bob Prey is named Michigan DeMolay Master Councilor for the coming year. Proceeds from a Tuesday dinner for Masons fund softball uniforms. The chapter honors its Seventh District Champion basketball team and coach Ernie Bryant at the Friday event.

Dehmel Saw Mill Destroyed By Fire In Clare Area

Walter J. Dehmel saw mill opposite the Clare Livestock Auction Yards west of Clare burned to the ground Thursday afternoon. Clare Fire Department units arrived at 12 50 p m to find the building practically destroyed. Dehmel had just sawn two slabs when he spotted fire on the south side and tried a hand extinguisher to no avail. Loss estimated at 5000 dollars, partially covered by insurance.

Detroit Driver Killed in Rustic Point Crash

Ard Eine Beetham of Detroit died in a Thursday afternoon crash near Clare at the Rustic Point Restaurant. Marjory Nichols Mattos of Beaverton home in Mt. Pleasant and three children were injured. Beetham drove a Nash eastbound and altered into a gas station left turn, colliding with a Desoto driven by Marjory Mattos.

Annie Rodgers Dies at 76 in Clare Hospital

Annie Elizabeth Sanford Rodgers died May 13 at Clare Community Hospital after a two day illness. She lived in Clare over fifty years, widow of James R. Rodgers, with two daughters Mrs. Roy Milnes and Mrs. Stanley Stealy. Survived by three grandchildren, siblings and other relatives. Services were held in Congregational Church, Rev. Wm. Powe officiating. burial in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Theo Wallington Elected Mayor by City Commission

Theo Wallington won the mayoral post as Clare shifts to a city commission government after April 6 1891. The council appointed Alex McKinnon city clerk and treasurer, Joseph Naumes city attorney, and three supervisors to consolidate tax rolls for July collection under the new charter. The meeting also named Albert Halety as Mayor Pro Tem and announced Wallington’s pledge to work with citizens and fellow officials.
