June Is Dairy Month highlights Michigan dairy efforts
The June Dairy Month committee promotes dairy products through quality improvements. Michigan leads in compulsory pasteurization and laws governing processing. Michigan State College researchers test processes to boost shelf life and quality while marketing experts seek better distribution to households. Dairy supports many families, and milk distribution outpaces other goods. A daily quart of milk meets about half a family’s food needs at a quarter of the budget.

Milk Records Show Feed Limits Boost Profit on Dairies
Agricultural economist Ray Hoglund says feeding beyond production needs is inefficient. Using Michigan farms A and B as examples he notes cows producing about 14 200 pounds of milk per cow annually with 2700 and 6500 pounds of grain respectively. He finds proper grain aligns with production and DHIA testing to determine each cow’s capacity.
