At the Clare public high school annual awards ceremony on Friday May 27 students earned new and ongoing honors across scholastics athletics drama agriculture and citizenship. Fred Haggart won the Ed Wichert Jr Memorial Trophy for a .417 batting average and first engraving on the trophy. Pete Brown received the VFW scholastic trophy for top NHS candidate. Bonnie Witbeck won the National Arion Award, with a gold plaque and medal. Memberships to the National Honor Society were announced for ten students.

Clare Enters Fight Against Gas Rate Hike
City officials Clare City Manager Willard Wedge and City Attorney Theo Pixley spoke in Lansing at a Public Utilities Commission hearing on a proposed Michigan Consolidated Gas rate increase. They were sent by the Clare City Commission to protest. The hearing will extend several days with outcomes pending. Michigan Consolidated seeks about a 25 percent rate rise and would drop early payment discounts while imposing penalties for late payments.

Former Clare Mayor Herschel Halstead Dies at 60
Herschel B. Halstead, a former Clare mayor, died at his Sebewaing home Friday morning May 27 after a long illness. Born October 15, 1888 in Sinker Creek Idaho, he moved to Clare as a child and later worked for the Michigan Conservation Department and the State sales tax department in Flint. He married Blanche G. Case in 1909 and Lenda Fliegel in 1929. Surviving are his widow, a daughter Dorothy True of Sebewaing, a stepson Horton Case of Clare, three grandchildren and three step grandchildren and a sister Lillian Brown of Lansing. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed in Silverland Cemetery in Sebewaing.

Sixty four Clare seniors are set for an outdoor commencement on Friday night June 3 at 8 p.m. at the school athletic field if weather allows. Diplomas will be presented by Attorney Harold B.
