Wind Caves Birth and Why It Is Named

Wind Cave in South Dakota lies in the Pahasapa limestone. It is believed to have been discovered in 1881 by Tom Bingham while deer hunting after he heard a whistling sound from wind flowing through a small opening. The cave's only known natural entrance is a hole about 10 inches in diameter. The name derives from the alternating strong winds at the cave mouth caused by external atmospheric pressure changes.
