As of January 31 1948 the Police Department reports 177 automobile wreck investigations involving 177 cars and 26 hospitalizations. The most costly crash on November 14 caused $2250 in damage. total property damage stands at $17935. Deaths total 2 in Clare county 1946 1947 city deaths 2 plus 1 in January 1948. Pioneers Defeat Shepherd on Home Floor Tuesday Evening
Clare High School Pioneers beat Shepherd 40 to 27 to level their season at six wins and six losses. Campbell led scoring with 16, Hahn 15 for Shepherd, and the game featured a steady Pioneers lead and a late third quarter push by Shepherd. The senior players close their home season this Friday against Evart before tests at Gladwin and Evart to end the year.

Mrs Burt Hubel Passes Sudden Death In Store
Viva Heller daughter of Stephen and Lizzie Heller was born August 18 1894 in Troy Indiana. She died February 3 1948 at her home in Arthur township Clare County Michigan at age 53 years 5 months 21 days. She married Burt Hibel July 5 1911 in Clare and had three children Cecil Isobel and Steve. The family moved from Gladstone to Naubinway and finally to Arthur township where they ran a store for 24 years ending with her sudden death at work. She was devoted to home family and helping others and enjoyed the outdoors.

Tragic Mt. Pleasant Fire Claims Seven In One Home
A mother and five children died in a six room Mt. Pleasant house fire Sunday morning. Roy Wohlscheid 35 and his wife Margaret 27 perished along with Roy Jr. 10 Beverly 9 Richard 7 Dale 5 and Patricia Ann 2 34. The father died later at Central Michigan Community Hospital after suffering 95 percent burns. Fire officials said a gas stove may have caused the blaze aggravated by zero weather and a broken gas line.

Two fined for shooting deer out of season
Evart men Fred Bissett and Robert Herman, both 26, were arrested by Conservation Officers for killing deer out of season near a Michigan Consolidated Gas pumping station. They pled guilty, each fined 50 dollars plus costs, and the deer was confiscated with meat given to needy families.
