Grass Sods Best For Orchards Compared To Legume Sod
Michigan State researchers tested seven sods at the Graham Experiment Station from 1951 to 1954. Grass sods such as Kentucky bluegrass timothy and redtop conserved more moisture at depth than legume sods, reducing fruit size risk in dry seasons. Legumes also attract buffalo tree hoppers and can dull fruit color. Mowing grass sods in early to mid summer saves moisture when scarce but may increase use in wet seasons. late summer mowing may help conserve moisture in plentiful years.

Michigan State economists foresee 1965 farm outlook
MSU farm economists predict a expanding 1965 economy with population growth, steady price supports, and a cold war era backdrop. Yields up about 21 percent, food output up 21 percent, nonfood farm products down 5 percent, and per person real income up about 20 percent. Surpluses persist with prices down around 8 percent and Michigan farms shrinking 15 percent in number but larger in size, 20 to 25 percent higher prices, and farms becoming 15 to 20 percent more efficient. To avoid zero return, Michigan farmers must boost efficiency through adoption of techniques and faster research application.
