Hunters Help Cut Michigan Forest Fire Toll in Snowbound Winter
Heavy snowfall blankets Michigan as the 1956 forest fire season ends with 696 fires damaging 3378 acres of state and private lands. Officials praise hunter cooperation and swift fire suppression, noting the unusually dry woodlands and a record low fire count since 1951, with Governor Williams' fire ban in effect during part of the season.

Wildlife experts plan aid for threatened whooping cranes
U.S. and Canadian specialists met in Washington to discuss protecting the dwindling whooping crane population. About 25 to 30 birds remain, with eight young seen last fall offering cautious hope. Debates focus on artificial propagation versus protective measures to keep the species alive. Some hunters in Nebraska heeded caution this fall as cranes migrating to Texas wintering grounds were spotted with a flock of legal geese.

Lake Trout Spawn At Marquette Hatchery Amid Lamprey Losses
About one million lake trout eggs were collected from Lake Superior heavy fall spawning. Thirteen commercial fishermen from Munising and Marquette helped with the cooperative spawn. The total this year was smaller due to lamprey devastation. 90,000 eggs were taken from 44 brood stock lake trout reared at Marquette hatchery. The fish spawn multiple year classes to supply eggs and fish for future years. 8,000 to 9,000 splake eggs are also processed from crossbreds.
