Clare county farmers and landowners are restoring pines once dominated by the region. Seedling orders through the county extension and Soil Conservation offices total 123000 with 73000 from the Conservation nursery at Wiggins Lake and 50000 through district channels. Over 200000 seedlings planned for this spring with about 40000 planted each September. Norway and Scotch pines lead demand with Scotch pines favored for Christmas trees and Norway pines rising in popularity. Landowners now view reforestation as a viable investment despite past costs.
