Isabella County 4 H Achievement Day deemed the finest ever with superb exhibits and standout seamstressing. Tulk Chosen Soft Ball Commissioner

Allan Tulk was elected Clare county softball commissioner at a meeting of managers players sponsors and fans held Tuesday night April 19. Dr C J Bender district commissioner supervised the area including Clare Mecosta Montcalm Grat iot Isabella and Osceola counties. A second meeting will be held April 26 to decide on organized softball leagues with officers and a board of directors to be chosen. If a league forms eight or more teams are hoped to participate.

Clare County Schools Seek New Teachers for 1955 56

Clare Public Schools has six vacancies with T C Campbell hiring four junior high social studies, a vocational home economics teacher and three elementary posts. Farwell adds six positions with three replacements and three new. Harrison plans to hire one librarian trained teacher and an upper grade post, with two hires already lined up, including Mrs Leonard Schwanz and Ada Rose Richards. Rural boards report teachers secured for 22 districts with no consolidations or new transport plans yet.

Grade School Pupils Visit Blue Heron Nest

Helen Garthe’s Clare school pupils in Michigan took a field trip northeast of town to see a blue heron nesting site. They learned these protected birds nest high in trees for protection and that molesting them carries a heavy fine. A boy noted the birds are smart to nest where people cannot climb. the group stopped at the Dairy Freeze for a treat on the way back.

Local artists display work on Main Street shops

Local art classes led by Mrs. Virginia Seitz showcase student works in stores on Main Street. Pieces include Grace Mac Arthur prize winning The Fanny, landscapes by Adelaide Elden and Pete Beale, and a still life by Sarah Beck. Each picture hangs for one month, rotated across businesses through the summer.

Sentinel reader celebrates 47 years and local notes

Little League To Meet Monday

A large turnout of baseball fans sponsors and parents of Little League age boys has encouraged scheduling of another meeting to appoint committees and start work on the Little League organization Jay Green announced that the meeting would be held Monday evening April 25 in the Ag room at Clare Public School East End.

Lions' Les Bingaman to Speak at Clare VFW Hall

Les Bingaman, the Detroit Lions defensive guard, will appear at the Clare VFW hall Monday evening April 25 to show movies and discuss his Lions years. The talk comes as Bingaman gains demand for speaking engagements and admission is 50 cents.

Buddy Morrow Band to headline Mt Pleasant Hospital Ball

Clare Hospital Auxiliary sponsored a benefit card party at Hotel Doherty on Thursday night April 14. Twenty eight tables of cards were played and gifts donated by local businesses. Mrs J R Gershon chaired, Mrs William Maxwell donated the lamp door prize won by Mrs Galvin Foss, and Mrs Harrison Gingrich won the doll and wardrobe. A lunch followed. An orthopedic clinic will be held at the Gladwin Health Department on Thursday April 28. Dr. Campbell of Bay City will attend. An appointment is required before receiving service. The clinic operates under the State Department auspices.

Ministers Discuss Mental Health At Clare Group Meeting

Eighteen members of the Clare County Ministerial Association met April 19 at Clare Methodist Church. Rev. Olson spoke on ministers mental health, with a Phillips 66 discussion of dangers and improvements. A nominating committee was named and a potluck meeting planned for May 10 at Gods Way Camp.

Windover Cabins Sacked By Teen Gang

A teen gang member Ronald Coop, 17, of Jackson, was arraigned before Justice Wm. B. Dunlop on breaking and entering Windover Lake cottages. Coop is bound to circuit court on $500 bond. others suspected, including theft of an outboard motor and rifles, and trout fishing out of season. Harold Kelly, 25, of Farwell, fined $5 and costs for fishing without a license.

Clare considers 17.8 mill city tax in budget forecast

City Manager Willard Wedge presented a budget summary to Clare's city commission noting a possible tax mill rate cut to 17.8 mills. The next year’s estimated spending is 160,486.94 dollars with revenue projection of 165,698.22 dollars, keeping the city in the black and leaving a expected balance of 73,767.04 dollars by July 1. Mayor Albert Haley and ex mayor Howard M. Everty led the outgoing commission, while Hadley resumes the mayoralty after a campaign with six candidates.

Drive-In Openings Draw Spring Moviegoers At Northland

Patrons flocked to the Northland drive-in for its April 15 opening amid mild spring weather.
