Soil Bank Plan Labeled Greatest Boon to Wildlife

Ernest F. Swift of the National Wildlife Federation says the soil bank program proposed in the farm bill could become the greatest boon to farm and game restoration, with provisions by the Senate and House conferees promising a well rounded program of soil water forest and wildlife conservation. The federation notes prior federal payments often neglected wildlife timber and water resources, and Swift says the group has taken no stand on the price supports controversy amid threats of a presidential veto. He hopes the price support fight will not delay conservation benefits for the public and farmers under the soil bank plan.

Michigan voters eyed for nonpartisan state education board

Petitions circulate over six weeks to amend the state constitution and remove the state superintendent selection from politics. The plan would create an eight member nonpartisan board of education and place appointive control over the superintendent. Michigan Education Association backs the reform with broad organizational support aiming for the November 1966 ballot.
