Clare Michigan boosts business group as Roy Warner and Ted Pixley lead a revival. A kickoff breakfast drew record attendance while committees report progress on new industry prospects, tourism promotions, and dues reform aiming for 100 percent membership and $2500 in annual dues.
Hotel Doherty hosted multiple industry and service group gatherings during a busy week. Attendees included 150 Gulf Oil dealers, Iron Fireman staff, Beta Sigma Phi founders, Clare Kiwanis Rotary clubs, Michigan Oil and Gas Association, Pere Marquette fishing club, Michigan State Utility Works Council, Sun Oil Company employees, Zonta Club en route to Traverse City, Grange Mutual Insurance, Michigan Gas Storage, Coleman Ladies Bowling, Chevrolet parts managers, and Gateway Lanes bowling banquet attendees. Regular club meetings continued alongside these events.
About 600 attended the Isabella county 4-H achievement program at Mt. Pleasant High School. Awards honored handicraft conservation deeryard study style show knitting good grooming child care and home improvement. Nine boys and eight girls were named delegates to State 4-H Club Week at Michigan State University with alternates chosen.
The Citizens State Bank of Clare moved up to 4,309th largest among 14,000 U.S. banks, after gaining 552 places in the past year. The article in American Banker notes the bank's improved size and ratings amid this ranking shift.
John Asline of Clare suffered a heart attack while traveling home from Florida with Mrs. Asline. They reached Franklin North Carolina where Berg at Angels Hospital treated him and he is expected to remain there about two weeks before returning home to Clare.
Clare's city fire department battled a string of calls including a $300 car fire on East Fourth near McEwan, a total loss Elm Grove hall fire, and multiple grass fires on Beaverton road and East Second street. Chief Parish urges permits and caution with burning. rural fires should be reported to the Conservation department.
James Davis began duty with the Clare city police Saturday afternoon. He previously sold cars in Clare and now lives with his family at Harrison while seeking a home in Clare.
Fifteen Dover Sunday school Young Married class members gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lloyd for a Hardtimes party. They wore ragged costumes and used a newspaper tablecloth with carrot top centerpiece. Rev. Arthur Cunningham led devotions, and Mrs. Jean Rank won the door prize.
A quarter mile Tobacco River stretch from US-27 east through the tourist park will be reserved for young anglers under 16. Signs mark the ends before opening day, with regular trout stocking planned. A Derby and invitation to local youths are planned, with a possible trout king. Sponsored by the Clare Chamber of Commerce.

Axea Activities Bullets Board reports a joint public installation at Clare IOOF Hall hosted by Cantop and Auxiliary No 55 with state officers presiding. Rebekahs Oddfellows and friends are invited. Susannah Wesley Circle plans a May 30 gathering in church parlors with a musical program featuring Lloyd Conley and the Glare Congrestional Junior Choir.
A colored film Journey To Hope will be shown at the Gilmore Church of Christ near Farwell this Sunday at 8 pm.
The Ladies Union will meet with Mrs Nellie Neimeyer this Friday April 27. Members are invited to attend at the usual meeting place to discuss upcoming community projects and social events.
Will Lange, Clare shoe repairman, was rushed to Owosso Friday with acute appendicitis. He underwent an operation on Saturday after the Langes had recently returned from wintering in Florida.
Thursday afternoon shopping hours are being resumed May 3 by most Clare retailers after a Chamber of Commerce breakfast urged keeping stores open. Citizens State Bank to hours 9 to 3 Monday to Thursday and 9 to 5 Friday, with Saturday 9 to 12, aligning with regional banks.
The Woman's Society of the Methodist church runs Well Baby Clinics across three counties with doctors and nurses, expanding space from school to church basement. Registrations surged to 75 on April 18, including 44 polio shots, as volunteers handle weighing and clerical tasks. The group also pledged 25 dollars to a proposed six county Child Guidance Clinic. The school emphasizes accuracy with a special key, offers a 10 to 12 week course with placement service and a $160 total tuition paid in weekly installments.
A baby shower for Tina Louise Aube, one month old, was hosted at the Aube residence Thursday evening. Attendees included Mrs. Dale White Mrs. Robert Cimmerer and Mrs. Fred Busche Jr. Prizes went to Miss Josephina Koch high and Mrs. Murl Fetters low.
Ninety-nine Clare County youths showcased projects at Harrison on April 20 as 4-H Achievement Day featured a daisies don’t tell style revue. Lois Pudvay won a delegate spot to 4-H Club Week with Carol Kleinhardt named an alternate and several others earned honor roll pins. Special electrical and clothing exhibits were judged, with Winterfield 4-H receiving a $10 Consumers Power award.
The Clare Manufacturing Company male quartet has been busy with engagements including a Brothers Night in Midland Wednesday and Friends Night in Coleman Friday. Future bookings list a Midland Music Festival performance in May with three Farwell men Frank Warner and Wendel Cook as members. Ralph Carpenter of Harrison accompanies on piano.
Barwell resident Wally Merton prepares to celebrate his birthday on April 29 as friends plan greetings. A.A. Mayo Clinic trip left him recovering at home. Separately Lyman Fish found a long lost watch in Hamilton township, buried in a three quarter century old oak stump, later exposed during land clearing and stump removal.
Four minor age youths from Clare Saginaw and Essexville pleaded guilty in Clare Municipal Court on April 23 to possessing beer in a car stopped for speeding on McEwan Street April 22. Each was fined 12 dollars plus costs by Justice William B. Dunlop.
Mt Pleasant Knights of Columbus Council 1297 will host the tenth district gathering bringing Clare Beal City Alma councils. Mass and communion begin at 8:00 am at Shared Heart Church on Sunday April 29 with Alma Council fourth degree members as honor guard. Breakfast follows and speakers include Thomas M. Kavanaugh and Dominic McConnell.
Brand school district voters approved annexation with Clare district in an April 20 election. The move unites the two districts under a reorganized system and sets tax millage limits while assuming Brand’s share of bonded debt. Brand lies in Arthur township northeast of Clare and will not add students as Brand students already attend Clare schools.
Miss America 1956 Sharon Kay Ritchie of Denver will attend the Miss Central Michigan pageant on June 2 at Central Michigan College. The winner competes in Miss Michigan at Muskegon on June 20. Entries are open for Clare County contestants with a large cash prize and merchandise awards for top finishers.
Wayne Pitts topped a field of seventeen with a 237 score in Clare Rifle Club shooting. Floyd Norcutt placed second with 188 as the club plans monthly meetings on the first Monday. An outdoor pistol range may be used and an outdoor rifle shoot is scheduled tonight at 8 at the range.
A four team men’s softball league was organized at a meeting last week by County Softball Commissioner Allan Tulk to involve eighty players. A follow up meeting is set for Tuesday night May 1 at 7:30 at the school to expand to six teams and seek inter-city league play with Coleman. The group plans to request recreation funds to maintain the diamond and program.
The Farwell Cub Scouts met at the Methodist Church on Tuesday April 17 with Cub Master Leon Thrush presiding. Lions badge earns went to Earl Irwin and Glen Denton. Gold and Silver Stars were awarded to members across Dens 1 through 4. various den badges and wolf badges were presented.
