Senator Taft waltzes through a Yale club picket line in New York where Local 830 CIO strikers protest Vim Stores for higher wages. Signs accuse Taft-Hartley of undermining organized labor.
Telephone Workers Local 28 unanimously approved affiliating the Cincinnati unit with the Cincinnati CIO Council at the May 24 meeting at the Hotel Linton. The Local also authorized subscriptions to SUN for all members and named delegates Nell McKee Ernestine Locknane and the president to the SUN.
Local 28 in Cincinnati is represented by Gates in matters affecting the unit. The text indicates Gates acts for the local in official capacities.
Units at Dayton Columbus Cambridge and Portsmouth Ohio authorized to apply for CIO Council membership when members vote. Participation will link Long Lines Tele phone Workers with other industries for exchange of views social events and community welfare. A weekly news sheet is planned through the local’s mother organization and a bonus of one dollar is offered for each new member signed up. Secretary Courtney Durham reports rapid signups with twelve new members in a week.
Negotiations resume between the American Union of Telephone Workers and AT T over a long lines contract. Extension to June 7 and renewed talks under the Federal Mediation Service. Board of Inquiry hearings postponed to June 8. potential further extension to June 14 if no agreement.
Schellenberg declared that AUTW and TWOC CIO affiliates are on the right road through CIO affiliation to build a national union with real hearing where it counts.
Members of Local 508 Oil Workers will vote Friday June 4 for local union officers for the coming year. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the local headquarters. Nominations included president Harry Weisel and Harry Weber with Kenneth Burgess, recording secretary Floyd Young, guide George Morgan, guard Stanley Eckel, trustees Cliff Gutzwiller William Bennett Kenneth Taylor and Francis Duncan. Harry Welsch and C. E. Wright to attend District 6 Education meeting June 17-19.
Local 508 approved subscribing all members to The SUN and affiliating with the Ohio CIO Council. The union plans to provide gas and oil to members traveling to Toledo for the August international convention. Upcoming meetings are set for 7:30 p.m. Monday June 28 and 7:30 p.m. Monday June 14 for the Gulf Refinery group.
