Five economists in the May issue of Report On Our Economy fault the steel industry for current shortages. They say capacity could rise about 15 percent with little resource drain and that fear and past depression experience limit expansion, worsening inflation and broad production.
Federated Press reports President A F Whitney of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen urged permanent government ownership of railroads after government seizure to avert a strike. Leaders of 21 unions had also called for government ownership, at least temporarily, intensifying the national debate over railway control.
The attorney general approves a check-off form authorizing deduction from an employee's wages for monthly union dues and initiation fees. It assigns the amount to Local Union No. and the International Union, with the employer directed to withhold from the first pay each month and remit to the union according to established rates.
