Ohio Sales Tax Yields and city aid dispute
William Lavelle, CIO secretary treasurer, told Gov. Herbert that the 1947 Ohio budget relied on 95 million in sales tax but brought in 125,815,837. The 1948 plan projects 91 million yet the CIO expects around 140 million. The CIO invites the Ohio Association of Cities to seek a fall referendum if the governor does not act. Cincinnati is seen as needing more funds in 1948, especially if living costs rise and pay raises for city workers are required. Cities with payroll taxes have used city and school employee needs to win support for such laws.
