Social Services loses 300000 to new Iowa prisons agency
Des Moines officials say Legislature creates a separate Department of Corrections to run prisons, taking about 300000 from the Department of Social Services budget and moving 16 positions. Reagen says the shift will cause an awkward transition and job downgrades as the Social Services department reorganizes into the Iowa Department of Human Services with seven divisions.

Iowa district courts filed 94,771 civil and criminal cases in 1982, down 0.4 percent from 1981, though dispositions rose. Civil filings fell 4.2 percent while criminal filings rose 5.6 percent. domestic cases made up 46 percent of civil filings. The Supreme Court issued 467 formal opinions, up 21.9 percent, while 1,849 cases reached the high court, a 6.7 percent rise.
