Senate backs repeal of interest withholding but delays start

The Senate voted 86 to 4 to kill the withholding of income taxes from interest and dividends but delayed the start to August 1 as Congress must finish repeal steps. A 48 to 41 vote approved a Republican substitute with stricter reporting and penalties, while four Democrats opposed the repeal.

Senate votes to raise own pay and delay honoraria cap

The Senate approved a 15 percent pay raise to 69,800 dollars for members, with a 49 to 47 vote. Iowa Republicans Roger Jepsen and Charles Grassley opposed. The panel also postponed six months for the honoraria limit set at 20,940 dollars per year, 30 percent of salary, amid conflict of interest concerns.

Bill Sackter dies in sleep inspiration for TV film

Bill Sackter, the Iowa City man depicted by Mickey Rooney in the CBS TV film Bill, died in his sleep at a boarding house. He was 70, known for harmonica performances at Wild Bill’s cafe and for Santa appearances. Sackter moved to Iowa City with Barry Morrow after leaving Faribault and inspired the film and a sequel.

Cedar Rapids man injured by 20 foot fall from snow silo

Roger Loehr, 24, was scaling down a 35 foot wall on Killian's parking ramp using a rope when he slipped and plunged about 20 feet onto the concrete floor of a snow silo. He sustained a fractured back and was treated at St Luke's Hospital. authorities say the silo had recently clogged drains and had not been cleaned in years.
