Man Aids at Accident Turns Hero By NorthWest Citizen

John McDaniel, 20, of Rockford Road SW, helped a badly injured driver at a Rockford Road collision Monday night. He and another bystander held the driver down until rescue crews arrived, then the man was listed in fair condition with facial cuts, chest injury, and a broken arm at Mercy Hospital.

Senate approves deregulation bill for cable TV

The Senate voted 87 to 9 to pass a broad cable deregulation bill creating a nationwide regulatory framework. It limits franchising fees to 5 percent of revenue, requires franchise renewals, and caps subscriber fee increases to inflation. An earlier 55 to 44 vote defeated an amendment aimed at tighter regulation for telephone-like data services. The measure now heads to the House for action.

Five dead as Ramada Inn fire rips through wing in Fort Worth

A pre dawn blaze in a Ramada Inn northeast wing started in carpeting and spread quickly killing five people and injuring 33 including an Iowa woman. Fire officials blamed corroded batteries and lack of smoke alarms for the deadly outbreak.

Reagan Says U S Schools May Be Too Easy

President Reagan told educators in Tennessee that American schools have perhaps become too easy due to the abandonment of compulsory courses. He faulted his generation for creating a “sorry state” of education and urged exposure to math and science for all students.

The group links to Voluntary Hospitals of America for bulk buys though three St Luke's managed facilities are not VHA members.
