Iowa City man bids to buy and destroy South African wines
Iowa City resident Joe Grant offers to purchase about 100 cases of five South African wines for more than 5000 dollars from the Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Department. He plans to destroy the bottles as a symbolic protest against South Africa's racial policies. The state calls it a business decision to reduce slow sellers as part of a warehouse clearance begun years ago. Grant plans to sell 10 dollar sponsorships to fund the purchase, with a September event for observers to witness the uncorking and pouring of the wine onto the ground.
