Social Security changes affect farm wage reporting in 1957
The Richmond Social Security office chief explains new rules for taxable farm wages. Beginning 1957 cash wages of less than 100 dollars per worker can be taxable if earned on multiple days or if paid on a time basis, with reports due for wages 150 dollars or more or any time-based pay across twenty days. Employers must record worker names and Social Security numbers and file Form SS-4 to obtain an identification number. Tax returns for 1957 are due January 31, 1958.
