Purdue advises late summer rye pasture sowing for dairy farms
Agronomists at Purdue University recommend sowing rye in late August or early September to yield late fall and winter pasture. Balbo rye is preferred for less milk taint in dairy cows. Use about six pecks per acre with a liberal complete fertilizer like 4-16-16 or 10-10-10. It can follow an early harvest or be sown via dishing meadow crops. Rye provides excellent pasture for brood sows pigs cattle and sheep.
