Robert Turner of Indianapolis son of Mr and Mrs Toy Turner fell from a barn Tuesday while helping his father in law. He sustained a broken back and was hospitalized in Indianapolis. The Turners and their daughter, formerly of Carthage, owned Turner's Restaurant.
Steve Hunt son of Mr and Mrs Sharon Hunt will serve as minister at Raysville Friends Church for the next year.
Miss Carol Ewing daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Ewing and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Guy Ewing entered Purdue University last Wednesday to study Home Economics.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sandefur said they visited Mrs. Sandefur's brother and their daughter in Missouri and planned to leave in a few days for California.
Mr and Mrs William Mann and their son relocated this weekend to a site south of Morristown Shelbyville R R 1 until their new dwelling west of Morristown on State Road 52 is completed.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Beck returned home Monday night from a ten day motor trip visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains Gulfport Mississippi and traveling back through the southern states.
Mrs. Roy Stanley Mrs. Jack Mossey and Mrs. Lena Newsom attended a Woman’s Society of Christian Service group meeting in Waldron on Thursday.
Mrs Grace Gurley Mrs H T Beher Mrs Noah Leisure and Mrs Fred Flick traveled to Indianapolis on Wednesday to see the musical Oklahoma at the Lyric Theatre, enjoying an evening of theater together.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Sher wood announce the engagement of their daughter Carol Dean to Harold Souder son of Mr and Mrs Howard Souder both of Rushville Carthage R R 2 The wedding date has not been set.
Official registration for students entering kindergarten begins at 10 45 on Monday October 1. Children five by October 15 are eligible. Parents must accompany their child with a birth certificate and park on the building's north side. Charles L Morris Principal.
Carthage High School Raiders scored 10 points to Milroy 26 in a cross country meet at Milroy Tuesday evening. Individual scorers for Carthage were Phil Parish first Kirby Ovan second Jimmie Overman eighth and Dudley Leisure fourth. The team next competes at Morristown on Monday September 24 at 4 p.m. with several other schools entered.
Philip Stultz of Posey Township was named to represent Rush County in the Rural Youth Talkfest. The event, held Tuesday night at the Farm Bureau Store in Rushville, included Mark Porter as alternate. John L. Marks of Indianapolis led recreation planning while Robert E. White of Carthage handled local club officer installation for 1957.
The birthdays of Mrs. John Porter and Joe McClurg were honored with a pitch in dinner at Rushville City Park on Sunday. Guests included Elmer Porter and family, Mary Gurley, Sarah Mathers, Marcus McClurg and son Randy, Carthage Porters, Vevay McClurgs, Greenfield Porters, Raleigh Butlers, near Rushville McClurgs, Connegoville McCormicks, Oliver Earnest, and William Nelson families. Relatives in South Bend visited over the weekend.
The Fall Festival committee announces class representatives for the Queen and King contest. Seniors Mary Lukens and Larry Little lead the list, with Norma Sipes and Jerry Wrightsman for juniors, Marsha Leisure and Myron Trowbridge for sophomores, and Bonnie Jones and Keith Logan for freshmen.
The Indiana Health Department budget proposes 212000 to construct a one story brick building next to the Home's hospital in Center Township to house about 75 preschool children with an outdoor playground. If the 1957 legislature approves, work could start late next year with completion by late 1958. The ISSC Home budget also requests 120000 for repairs and improvements.
Leaders from 15 Rush County Home Demonstration clubs met in the Courthouse Assembly Room for a training session titled Good Buys, Furniture Wise. Miss Vanis Deeter, extension specialist at Purdue University, presented trends in furniture types and criteria for selecting wood and upholstered pieces. Leaders will present the lessons at September October or November club meetings in Rush County.
Army Private Samuel C. Gray, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Gray of Rushville Indiana, started the second phase of a six month training tour at Fort Sam Houston Texas. He will spend eight weeks in medical training at Brooke Army Medical Center after completing eight weeks of basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Gray, a 1956 Carthage High School graduate, may complete his service in a local Army Reserve or National Guard unit.
Farmers may apply by October 6 for a $200 scholarship covering tuition fees and living costs for winter agriculture courses at Purdue University. Judging centers on farming experience with option to study at another school. The winner will be announced at the International Daily Show in Chicago October 6 to 18. Max Robertson son of Mr and Mrs Roy Robertson stationed on Okinawa has been promoted to Private First Class. In a letter to his parents he says he has received a Pacific Unit Citation. He notes his unit has been buffeted by three recent typhoons on Okinawa.
Carthage High School baseball won two of three in a week, beating Knightstown 8 to 1 and Milroy 3 to 2, before a shutout loss to Charlottesville 0 to 2. Magee pitched seven strong innings against Knightstown, while McClurg led with two singles and a triple. Knecht led Milroy with three doubles. Charlottesville defeated Carthage 3 to 0 behind a duel between Little and Hudson as Carthage fell short on offense.
Mrs. John White visited her parents Mr and Mrs Arthur Brunson at Willow Branch Sunday evening. Guests included Mrs Nelle Newby and Mrs Iva Cook with a dinner at Mrs Newby s home. Wallace Cook of Indianapolis attended a wedding in Shelbyville after visits with Greenfield guests Albert Smitha and Mr Smitha and Mrs McHoney of New Castle then Mr and Mrs Clyde Tatman of Cincinnati joined Florida bound relatives. Sunday calls at Mrs Gouldie Kyser s home included Mr and Mrs William McHoney of New Castle, sister of Mrs Hattie Innis. Numerous family visits and a Purdue Glee Club concert at Rushville gym followed by Sunday family dinners and picnics are noted across Rushville and nearby towns.
All unregistered voters in Carthage and Ripley Township must register to participate in the November 6 general election. Unregistered include those not filed, not voted since 1954 primary, or moved since last eligibility. Register at Carthage Auto License Bureau if precinct contact fails.
Cedric L. Carwein 46 of Topeka Kansas and a former Arlington resident died Monday in a Topeka hospital after a long illness. He was born February 13 1910 in Arlington the son of George and Blanche Downey Carwein. He graduated from Arlington High School and later moved to Topeka nine years ago where he led Kinreco Products Company. A World War II administrative assistant in the Army supply department at Topeka he was a member of the Arlington Christian Church. He is survived by his widow Carolie Kinyon Carwein two daughters Iris L. Carwein and Mrs James L. McClain two sisters Mrs Ernest Beckner and Mrs Robert Sterrett a brother Carl D. Carwein and two granddaughters. Funeral 2 pm Friday Wyatt Moore Memorial Rushville with Rev Robert Schondelmayer officiating burial Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday morning.
The Fall Festival talent show Shower of Stars will be at Carthage Community Center Friday night with the High School Band from 7:30 to 8:00 and the show starting at 8:00. Prospective participants must contact the committee by September 25 and rehearsal is September 26 at 7:00. Tickets are on sale at the drug store, reserved seating 65 cents and 50 cents. Committee members include Mrs. Ruth Hunt Mrs. Helen Ruby Mrs. Sue Ann Land Miss Dorothy McShirley and Eugene R Gardner.
Mrs. Grant Henley entered Rush Memorial last Thursday for blood transfusions. Mrs. Laura Benson is in serious condition at Rush Memorial Hospital from a heart attack last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Brecell Bever remain serious at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Ed Ruby remains serious at Jackson Nursing Home in Rushville. Mrs. Ina Rhodes remains the same at her home after a fall last week.
Mr and Mrs C G Hill were guests of Mr and Mrs Lee Phelps in New Castle. Eugene Gardner and family visited Mary Gardner in Shelbyville while Ann Gardner and family shopped in Indianapolis. Harry Elder and Harold Cappel visited William Lockridge in Muncie. Nancy Murray from Ball State Teachers College spent the weekend at Carthage home. Janet Hunt and family hosted Ball State visitors over the weekend. Robert Adams from Michigan was a house guest of Janet.
The Wesleyan Methodist youth rally in Shelbyville featured workshops for local society officers led by Rev. Robert McIntyre editor of the Wesleyan Youth. Marion College Male Quartette performed as new officers were elected and Carthage church won the banner with 148 points. The next rally is set for September 30 at 2 30 p m at the local Wesleyan church with Rev Lantis speaking.
Mr and Mrs Howard E Henley were in Richmond Tuesday afternoon. The brief mentions their presence in the city and notes their surname and initials.
Mr and Mrs Robert Stephens welcome a 6 lb 6 oz son born Friday at Rush Memorial hospital. The infant, named Robert Wayne, is grandson of Mr and Mrs Eli Stephens of Carthage and Mr and Mrs William Sorrell of Knightstown.

Reserve grand champion Hereford was shown by Larry Angle Rush County. champion Shorthorn by Kathleen White Decatur County. Pavey Stockyards Milroy and Greensburg bought top steers at 31 1/2 cents. Judge Steve Reed and auctioneer Coll Hoyt Vanderbeck led the event, with extensive Chamber of Commerce involvement and prize ribbons.
Senator Homer Capehart declares at Crown Point rally that under Republican rule unemployment set records and wages rise. He cites June employment at 66.503 million, a 1.3 million month gain, with construction and services hitting new highs and average weekly wage at 79.40, while unions grow to 17 million and the dollar stabilizes.
Mr and Mrs Harold Ruby hosted 56 Purdue Glee Club members and staff including Director Albert Stewart Assistant Director Bruce McGuire and pianist John Farley for a social afternoon and songs at their home. The group performed at Rushville High School gym and was later hosted by the Rush County Home Economics Chorus with refreshments. They were escorted by Town Marshal Hugh Trowbridge from Carthage to Rushville and back to Indianapolis.
Kathy Ree Smith celebrated her seventh birthday with a party at home last Sunday. Twenty one first grade guests attended as games and contests provided prizes to Lynn Ray Kim Lafuse and Whitfield.
