Romance of a Love That Ended in Tragedy
A centuries old village tale recounts a shoemaker family with three sons and two daughters whose daughter defies her parents to marry a love from a lower social station. After threats and flight, the couple wed, yet parental schemes to separate them fail. The story ends with a cousin's marriage to the daughter’s beloved and the parents facing ruin and regret over their interference. The writer, familiar with the families, notes the lasting sorrow and the longtime ill health of the young man who wed someone else after the tragedy.
