Widow's Mite and the Oak That Shaped Washington's District
The Widow's Mite legend ties a famed oak near Twenty fourth and E streets to land for the Capitol and Rock Creek Park. Stories recount a captive mother and child sheltered by the tree, and a 600 acre tract honoring her memory. Washington's later talks with landowners at Suter's Tavern disputed a formal treaty.
