Russell backs Eisenhower over Dewey as weakest GOP nominee

Georgia Senator Richard Russell told the Georgia American Legion convention that Thomas E Dewey is the weakest man the Republicans could have nominated for president. He warned Dewey could be beaten by a tidal wave of votes if Eisenhower is persuaded to run and criticized Dewey’s lack of international leadership. He praised Vandenberg, suggested Taft as an honest alternative, and urged Democratic unity to win with Truman, noting civil rights rhetoric may shift the platform. Russell doubted Southern nominees from Democrats and warned party cohesion could sway the election.

Georgia Democratic Party Faces Breakup If Truman Nominated

James S. Peters, chairman of Georgia's Democratic Executive Committee, predicted the Georgia delegation to the National Democratic Convention will be virtually uninstructed and oppose Truman. He warned Truman's renomination could cause the Georgia party to disintegrate. A preconvention caucus will decide delegation officials en route to Philadelphia, and Peters said he will run for chairmanship.
