Herman Talmadge formally entered the 1948 gubernatorial race after about 35 former University of Georgia Law School classmates contributed to his campaign in Atlanta. He pledged faith in Georgians and urged donors to guide and support his bid to preserve Southern traditions while pushing Georgia toward progress.

Roberta Wreck Injures Woman and Two Children in Georgia

In Roberta Georgia a 10 ton van struck a car carrying Mrs Milton Murphy and two children. The truck then crashed into Butler's restaurant causing significant damage. Police said the collision happened near the center of the intersection after a traffic light change.

City police and Columbus FBI are probing a ransom note sent to Dr. M. W. Jackson, a Columbus dentist, demanding 1800.50 and threatening death if not left by a tree on the old Ft. Benning road. The crude note claims the sender has 12 children and needs money.

Services At Chapel Postponed For Camp Meeting

There will be no worship at the Chapel in Butler on Saturday and Sunday July 10 and 11. Taylor Camp Meeting is in progress at the local camp ground and will continue through next Sunday night.

Revival Plan at Mt. Pisgah Church This July

The Mt. Pisgah congregation plans a revival beginning the fourth Sunday in July. Services include Sunday School at 10 30 a m with Carroll Peacock as superintendent and preaching at 11 30 a m and 8 00 p m by Pastor J H Stanford. The message will draw from Psalm 85 and invite community participation and prayers.

Keep Georgia Green Council Sets Year Program

The Keep Georgia Green Council, with Mr. R. L. Wilson as president, drew up a year long plan in Reynolds. It calls for a county fire protection unit, a goal of planting one million pine trees, two pine tree transplanting machines, and cooperation to plant two rows of pines along main highways to promote Taylor County. The program emphasizes reforestation and conservation with support from county agricultural agencies. The plan notes Taylor County was the first in the state to organize this effort.

Georgia Eyes Russell If Eisenhower Draft Fails

Georgia near term plan to back Sen. Richard B. Russell if drafting Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes impossible. State chairman James Peters said Georgia would press Eisenhower supporters to unite behind Russell at Philadelphia if Eisenhower cannot accept the nomination. Pace Seeks Reelection in Georgia District 3

Americus July 6 Rep Stephen Pace of Americus announced his qualification to seek another term representing the district in Congress. The district committee endorsed Pace with unanimous resolutions praising his leadership and urging continued service in Congress. The entry fee is $500 and filings open by July 10 with Ragan or Young presiding.

State officials announce automatic increases in pensions for widows, children, and dependent parents of veterans who died in service, under a new Truman law. Local Legion Post To Install New Officers Next Monday
