Texas Pioneers Come from Many Foreign Fields

Temple observes Central Texas Pioneers Day on Sept. 30 honoring 550 members including 19 from other states and 10 foreign countries led by Germany. A 75 percent turnout is expected for a day of business, tours, barbecue, and amusements.

A. and M. Mothers Club Turns Wool to Cash

San Angelo Texas September report shows the A. and M. Mothers Club gathering one thousand pounds of wool to aid the student loan fund. The wool will be spun into blankets and auctioned. Last year 833 pounds were sent away and 16 blankets sold for 140 dollars. The club has sent 250 dollars to the loan fund, bringing its total since 1927 to 1,856 dollars.

Work has begun on a brick two story duplex by Mr. and Mrs. A W Em mel on East 27th street next to the First Christian church. It will house two five room apartments with separate entrances and modern furnishings. Occupancy is expected before Christmas.

In Atkins Arkansas on September 12 a violin with a 211 year history is owned by 74 year old J. T. Bigger who plays by ear.

Peak Is Reached In Car Loadings Week of Sept 2

The American Railway Association reported week ending Sept 2 car loadings at 666 652, the year's high. Overall up 34 654 from prior week and 105 327 higher than last year, with most commodities rising except livestock and forest products. Southwestern district totals 49 776 with grain, livestock, coal, coke, forest products, ore and miscellaneous showing varied shifts.

Pensioners to Work in Brady Cotton Fields

The Texas Rehabilitation Commission estimates the bulk of this year’s cotton harvest in Brady will be picked by labor from the relief rolls. J. J. Boley says thousands on the relief rolls will be sent to cotton fields in coming months while relief funds will target those unable to work.

Texas health officials report four teen deaths from encephalitis or sleeping sickness this year. Over the past five years the disease caused 105 deaths in Texas. January saw five deaths, February three, March two, April two, and June and July one each. Deaths occurred across the state with no single hotspot. A close watch is maintained.

Oklahoma City Sept 12 Governor Murray said he favors an initiative petition to amend the state constitution to unseat all members of the state supreme court. Senator Margie Neal of Carthage announced Monday she declined appointment as recorder of the general land office of the United States, tendered by President Roosevelt.
