Methodist Women Hold Third Zone Meeting in Bryan

Members from Bedias Iola Normangee College Station and Bryan attended the quarterly third zone gathering of the Huntsville district Woman's Missionary Society at First Methodist Church Bryan. The program featured devotions talks on personality stewardship world outlook and time and money with a children's program and a later session on amendments and mission fields. The next quarterly session was set for College Station.

Negro Education Conference at Prairie View

The fourth annual State Conference on Negro Education drew 800 to 900 attendees from Bryan and Brazos County and across Texas. White and Black educators heard talks on Negro Rural Schools in Texas with remarks from state officials, college leaders, and local principals. The Prairie View Glee club performed and the program closed with discussions among educators from major Texas city systems.

Hold Two Youths For Auto Theft Arrest Friday

Ned Jones and Edward Thomas were arrested Friday afternoon by Sheriff J H Reed and Constable Horace Reed on auto theft charges connected to the T K Lawrence car stolen last week. The youths claim Eastland origins and a chase led to their detention on College Road. A hearing before Justice J T McGee is set for next week.

The Work of the Deaconess was the program topic led by Mrs. Leila Hamilton for Group 1 of the Woman's Missionary Society at First Methodist. The meeting at Mrs. L. B. Elrod's home drew 16 members including a visitor, with Mrs. A. M. Waldrop as chairman. After the program, hosts Mrs. Elrod and Mrs. J. B. Priddy served refreshments.

Mock Trial by Kings Hiway 4-H Club Draws Rural Crowd

The Kings Highway 4-H group hosted a mock trial in which a negro was prosecuted for stealing turkeys. D. H. Reid of A and M praised local teachers for rural development as musicians from Normangee performed. Lena Novosad led the club. County Agent Benson invited a repeat showing in April at Tabor.

Hiway Engineers From US Bureau At Short Course

Two engineers from the Bureau of Public Roads based in Fort Worth will be speakers at Texas A M College April 13 15 for a highway short course. The event is hosted by the civil engineering department with the state highway department.

Plan Drill Team For Bryan Grove Houstonians Aid

An all day open meeting arranged the organization of a drill team by Bryan Grove 460 Woodmen Circle held at the R of P Hall on Tuesday. The Houston Grove 540 drill team attended and paraded at 10 30 AM with officers including Ellen Patterson guardian Minnie Guseman advisor Caroline Choate banker Georgia Scherfus chaplain and Alice Cooper attendant. Visiting captain Ida Prince led the visiting team and Miss Lucile Choate was among visitors. Faye Gelber serves as guardian of the local grove.

Former Bryan Folk Send Radiogram From Honolulu

Mrs. C. A. Searcy received a radiogram from Mrs. L. C. McGarr formerly Miss Harriette Amsler of Bryan. Lieut and Mrs. McGarr, stationed at Fort Armstrong Honolulu, expect to return to the states and be in Bryan in June. The message says the three year passage bill requires them to stay in Honolulu three years instead of two, delaying their departure until March 1934.

Emma Griffith formerly served as attendance officer in the office of the county superintendent of schools. She is no longer connected with the office, according to statements by Mrs. Griffith and County Superintendent W. E. Neeley. No successor has been announced.

Start Drilling In Masten Well In Iola Sector

Drilling begins on the M D Masten G W Dodd No 1 well in the Timothy Jones survey Grimes county near Iola. Location is about 900 feet from the north line 300 feet from the east line and 3000 feet from the former well lost to water seepage. First well shows oil and gas and investors led by J C Barnett and Masten expect oil before the 3000 feet limit.

Baptist Sunday School Enlistment Campaign Success

The First Baptist Sunday School drew 509 attendees on March 26 surpassing the 500 goal with nine extras. Total offerings reached $197.05 for the day as all departments contributed to the victory and extended invitations to un affiliated Bryan residents to join a Sunday School.

College Avenue Holes to Be Filled Until Paved

The unpaved portion of South College Avenue will be repaired starting today. City Manager R G Williams said street car ties will be dug up and the ground filled with gravel and leveled to make the stretch passable until the new Bryan College highway paving is finished.

Grimes County Towns Get New Postmasters

Iola Navasota and Shire towns in Grimes County will receive new postmasters under the new administration. Republican postmasters’ terms expired and Hoover nominations were not confirmed by the last Senate. Acting officials will serve until appointments are made.

City Manager R. G. Williams announced that under the South College avenue sewer project every house tied into the sewer must have its own distinct connection. He noted this requirement is mandated by city ordinance and urged residents not to share a single sewer connection.
