Mrs. N. H. Young of Houston arrived from San Antonio with her daughter Miss Ora L. Young and stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Higgs in Benson Addition. Mrs. J. J. Cotton Spinning Shows Decrease During February

The census bureau reported that the cotton spinning industry operated during February at 95 percent of capacity on a single shift, down slightly from 95.1 percent in January and up from 92.5 percent in February last year.

Dr. R H Harrison of Bryan was the only local who joined the Washington inauguration visit for Franklin D. Roosevelt. He traveled on the Houston special to New York City and came back hopeful for the country’s economic recovery and the new administration.

Robbers Invas Post Office at Mullican Monday

The Millican post office was robbed Monday night for the second time in ten days. Postmaster Robert Dunlap told Sheriff J H Reed the interior was a wreck and gave no loss estimate. He asked where to find a fingerprint expert. the sheriff suggested contacting a post office inspector in Austin.

Mattress Fire Damages Only Bed in Miss Ball Home

A blaze in a bedroom at Miss Mary Ball's home burned a mattress but caused no other damage. Firefighters responded but could not determine the blaze cause.

Laying Concrete On Highway No 21 Begins Friday

Work to pour concrete on Highway No 21 west of Bryan will start Friday with forms set on Thursday. Crews will begin at the east end and extend to the Little Brazos river while graveling the dump to the new Brazos river bridge proceeds. Weather delayed the planned start about two weeks ago.

Battle Looms Over Beer Reform in Madison County

Madisonville reports preliminary plans for a local struggle against repealing the eighteenth amendment or liberalizing state prohibition. Dr. H K Taylor of Dallas spoke as vice president of United Forces for Prohibition. Local officers include J B Webb president and T B Wiser treasurer with an advisory group of community leaders.

St Joseph Parish Observes Patron Saint Feast Monday

St Josephs parish members held a full day program for the feast of patron saint St Joseph. Masses at 7 730 and 415 AM drew large congregations for communion while 930 AM saw parish society march to the church reciting the Creed. Long Debate Planned for Farm Relief

Washington, March 21. House readers dropped expectation of passing the farm relief bill today but now anticipate approval tomorrow. Speaker Rainey said long hours of debate are planned, preventing disposal of the measure by nightfall.

Nine Year Term Given Steen In Reed Attack

Cotton Crop 4 Million Bales Less Than 1931

Census bureau ginning reports show cotton production for last year at 12,994,430 five hundred pound bales, including 4,303,589 from Texas and 999,380 from Louisiana, compared with 17,095,594 bales for 1932.

Three Negro Youths Taken to Gatesville

Constable Horace Reed and his brother L S Reed brought three confessing boys to Gatesville after a burglary at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store ten days earlier. The youths named were P H Tyler Albert Hickman and Lorenzo Goolsby. Each received an indeterminate sentence.

Funeral for Pioneer Amos W. Buchanan Friday

Amos W. Buchanan died at 5:15 am Thursday at the family home after a five week illness due to influenza and complications. Born March 27 1857 in DeSoto Parish Louisiana he was 75 years 11 months and 17 days old. He lived in Steep Hollow Brazos County and attended local schools and A M College. He married Anna Peters December 28 1882 and leaves widow four sons Charles W. Buchanan Roy G. Buchanan H Grady Buchanan John D. Labor Needed For City Garden Project On West 28th Street

County Agent C. L. Benson sought volunteers at City Hall to assist in preparing a community garden on West 28th street. City officials noted rising labor availability as unemployment decreases. Crews also worked on College Avenue sewer, other city tasks, and a new concrete lay by Highway 21 west of Bryan.

Diptheria Serum Given to Rural Woodville Pupils

The Woodville School administered diphtheria serum to five more pupils bringing total immunization to 42 schoolchildren and three younger children not yet of school age have already received the serum. Teacher Mrs. P. A. Tardy supervises.

Roosevelt Proposes Civilian Conservation Corps to Create Jobs

President Roosevelt asked Congress to create a civilian conservation corps to employ 250,000 men in forests by early summer. He urged grants to states for relief, a broad public construction program, and a federal relief administrator to coordinate efforts. Funds for relief would be available until May. Speaker Rainey sent the message and draft bill to the labor committee.

Crop loan applications rise in five counties

A total of 1 638 loan applications have been received from farmers in Brazos Grimes Leon Madison and Robertson counties. District supervisor Eric E Brown said 1 420 had been sent out previously and the rest will go out tonight. The average loan is about 80 dollars, totaling just over 130 000 dollars.

Jesse Mosley and Elza Williams were arrested two days earlier on pistol charges and were taken to Hearne by Constable Josey after Hearne residents identified them and connected them to burglary there.

Legion Group Attends District Meeting in LaGrange

Ed S. Martin Leo Daniels Norman Stewart and H T Schovassa returned Monday from LaGrange where they attended a district meeting of the American Legion as representatives of Earl Graham Post No 159 They report a fine program and good attendance Mr Schovassa will report at the next Bryan post session Mrs Martin and Mrs Daniels joined the Auxiliary meeting held in connection with the Legion event.

Underground Water Surveys Highlight Texas Regions

Dr J T Lonsdale head of the geology department at A and M College spoke to Bryan Lions on underground water surveys in the Winter Garden area Toyah Basin West Texas Mineral Wells Duval county and Houston San Antonio. He noted surveys were authorized by the Texas legislature in fall 1929 with state and Federal funds matching for the project.
