Kurten Evangelical Picnic Draws Large Crowd

A large attendance filled Kurten school grounds for the Evangelical Church picnic on Thursday July 1 led by Rev J J Kasiske master of ceremonies. The Kurten brass band played throughout the day and Sam Eberstadt helped raise 35 dollars for church benevolence. F L Henderson introduced candidates who spoke about their platforms and gave an education address before cold drinks and meals concluded the event as a success.

Dooley of Iola Dies After Two-Week Illness

William D Dooley 50 4 18 died Saturday morning at 7 15 in a Bryan County hospital after a two week illness. Survived by widow and five children Forrest W Dool ey James Hazel Ruth all of Iola Grimes County. Body sent by McCulloch Gordon to his home for funeral Sunday at 10 conducted by Rev K P Post. Burial in Concord Cemetery.

Cole Family Heads West for Ten Day Camping Trip

Mr and Mrs Thurston Cole and their sister Miss Sunshine Cole depart Bryan for Junction Texas for a ten day camping trip. They will be joined in San Antonio by Mr and Mrs Devalson Buchanan of Robstown who will accompany them to Junction and join the camping party.

Jelly Production by Dr Hurff Sells Out at Bryan

Dr J F Hurff of Kurten school returns from Houston with several thousand jars of jelly from wild grapes and plums. The total output will exceed 4000 jars. He bottles juice from harvested fruit and uses a personal jelly formula. A Bryan buyer already purchased four dozen jars and claims it aids health. The venture, new to Bryan, suggests future profits for both Hurff and the town.

Steep Hollow Club Boy Grows Yard Beans

Raymond Moore 11, Steep Hollow Club Boy, brought to The Eagle a bunch of yard beans the first seen. He learned seeds from a neighbor and noted the beans are best when young for snap beans and later for stock. His effort shows pride in the project.

Jim Frances Seriously Injured At Goose Creek Parade

Mrs Jas S Francis of Tabor received word from Goose Creek that her grandson Jim Frances son of C B Francis of Goose Creek was seriously injured while impersonating a clown in a Fourth of July parade. He was thrown from a frightened horse and taken to Baytown Hospital in an unconscious condition with little expected improvement.

Price Family Leaves City for East and West

E W Price and family depart by car this morning for Atlanta Georgia to visit relatives. Price will proceed to West Virginia then Washington to begin a year long leave of absence from A and M College to work for the Department of Agriculture. They have resided in Holmes rent houses near the Free Baptist Church. The Holmes house will soon be occupied by E A Miller and family.

Road Work Progressing in Brazos County

Reports from Pitts Bridge say road work is progressing well under engineer R B Alexander. The Bryan College Road resurfacing and widening is moving ahead under A Leckie. Division engineer A McCormick notes daily crews repairing washouts on Bryan Hearne road, improving access into and through Brazos county.

Four Generations At E Griesser S Family Reunion

Four generations gathered this week in Bryan at the home of Mr and Mrs C E Griesser on West 24th Street. The group included Mr and Mrs R O Tedford of San Antonio their daughter Mrs Fanny Williams of Bryan her daughter Mrs Charles E Griesser and young Bobby and Ede Griesser. Roy Tedford of Houston also joined the visit. Tedfords departed by train and Houston bound later.

Three Brazos Boys Win Medals at Summer Camp

Fred Zak Phil Hensarling and Lawrence Hurff earned the marksmanship medal at Fort Sam Houston Summer Training Camp where A and M seniors Jack Konecky B F Risinger and B V Gayle study pistol shooting. The government supplied shells for the course.

Family Reunion at Stewart Home in Kurten

A Sunday family reunion was held at Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Stewart's home in Kurten with all members present except M. C. Stewart of Albany. A noon dinner was served and attendees included N. A. Stewart and five children of Albany, Plummer Smith and four children of Bryan, C. H. Warren and daughter of College Station, Ellen Stewart of Bryan, Nelson Way of College Station, and J. W. Stewart at home with his parents.

Rhodes Family Reunion Held This Week in Bryan

A warm Rhodes family reunion occurred this weekend at Mrs. A. M. Rhodes home in Bryan. Attendees include Aubra Rhodes and daughter Dorothy from Detroit, Emmett Cole and son Bobby from Fort Worth, Albert Rhodes of Shreveport, and D. X. Bible of College. Aubra Rhodes visits his boyhood home for the first time in fifteen years as relatives gather with Mrs. A. M. Rhodes and Miss Callie Tooke.

Extension Service advises dusting cotton with superfine sulphur as the most effective control for the cotton hopper. Several applications at five day intervals, eight to ten pounds per acre each time, during calm, dewy mornings or late afternoons, are recommended pending further research.

Old Confederate Veteran to Attend Galveston Meeting

F. S. Sims of Bryan, an elderly Confederate veteran, left by afternoon train for Galveston to attend the Old Landmarks Association meetings. He helped fortify Galveston in Civil War days and says the two organizations meet annually there.

Short Course At Medina Ranch Draws Wide Attendance

The Southern Texas Short Course will be held at Medina Hereford Ranch in Bexar county near San Antonio from Wednesday noon July 14 to Friday night July 16. About 2 000 people from 35 counties are expected. A L Smith district agent directs the course with Extension Service staff and J M Jones chief of Animal Husbandry and O F Irving of Poultry Department assisting.

Fuller Installed as President of Bryan Lions Club

Lion F D Fuller was formally installed today as president of the Lions Club of Bryan. In his inaugural address he pledged to continue rural community work, support Brazos county youths, advocate city government education, and promote city improvements, park development, and school enhancements while fostering unselfish service.

June Statistical Report by Brazos County Agent Beason

County Agent C L Beason’s June report for the Extension Service shows 955 miles traveled 76 office visits 62 telephone calls 27 letters written 67 farm visits 16 meetings with 1210 total attendees, plus 3 poultry days 8 club days 10 horticulture pecan days 2 community days and 3 miscellaneous days. Eight club meetings drawn 775 attendees. The note says the agent has been active though not all requesting help could be reached.

Tackey Party Held At Home Of Mrs McCaghren

On Monday night about 15 to 20 young men and women gathered at the home on College Road for a tackey party. Chaperoned by Mrs. W. S. McCaghren and Mrs. Jesse C. Thomson, accompanied by her mother Mrs. Price of San Antonio. Guests played lawn games with Raymond Mathis and Merle Henry winning the prize.
