Local families hosted kin from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Beaumont, Waco, and Galveston while civic groups organized events. Cotton exports hit record at Port of Houston

The Port of Houston reports a new all time high in cotton exports totaling 2,551,631 bales, surpassing the 1926-27 record by 192 bales. The season is expected to continue strong through August 1.

Cyclone Davis Campaigns for Congress in Texas

Judge J. H. Cyclone Davis, former congressman at large and county judge, spoke at the American Legion Fourth of July celebration in Bryan, announcing his bid for Congress. He denounced the Republican party, urging voters to support Roosevelt and Garner in November. He travels to Mexia and Hillsboro for further talks, then returns home to Sulphur Springs.

Allred Speaker At County Candidates Night

Attorney General James V. Allred spoke at First Christian church during County Candidates Night on Sunday. The event invited all county office candidates and reserved a side section for guests as candidates were introduced to the congregation. Allred is an active lay worker and Bible class teacher in Austin.

Wellborn Conoco Station Destroyed by Fire

The Conoco filling station at Wellborn operated by Ross Bond was totally destroyed by fire about 2 o'clock Monday morning. No loss estimate or insurance statement given. Building belonged to Douglass Boyder. Fire origin not determined.

Barbecue and Dance at Mumford for School Benefit

A barbecue and dance will be held at the Pecan Grove in Mumford on Thursday July 21 to benefit Mumford school. Pete Nigliazzo president of the Mumford school board announced the event. Barbecue at noon and the dance at night with all political candidates invited to speak at the barbecue.

Former Residents Caught in Flood Along Guadalupe

Emory Franklin reports that the Kerrville camp along the Guadalupe river housing the Williamson family was washed away by the Saturday flood. D. D. Williamson’s brother says the couple lost most of their possessions as they were ill and bedridden during the rise. Williamson, once a composing room foreman at Eagle Printing, had been staying in Kerrville since last summer and only recently returned there.

Milam Baptists Plan Fifth Annual Camp Session

Rev J L Wharton pastor of the First Baptist church will speak at the fifth annual Milam County Baptist encampment at Little River Wayside Park near Cameron July 24 to 29. Other speakers include Baylor University President Pat M Neff and Dr J Howard Williams Dallas and Rev Asa Avant Lampasas with experts leading Sunday School and Baptist Training Serving conferences.

Death of Mrs. E. P. Snuggs Mourned by A M College

Mrs. E P Snuggs mother of R E Snuggs of the A M College chemistry department died en route from China to the United States. A Baptist missionary for 42 years she served in the Pakhoi Mission field in South China and died aboard ship June 20 while sailing with her husband for health reasons. She had many friends in Bryan who will regret her death.

Sterling Block Sold at Auction for $750,000

In Houston on July 5 the 22 story Sterling Block, formerly owned by Gov. R. Sterling, was sold at public auction for $750,000 payable in outstanding notes. Special Master Alvin Moody oversaw the sale on courthouse steps. The sole bidder was John Bullington for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Boston, the mortgage holder.
