A reader recalls three weeks in Jasper County rural life noting busy people and vast crops. The account details ripening tomatoes and many vegetables, vast cornfields, pecan groves, orange trees, smoke houses with cane syrup and honey, smoked bacon, sausage, lard, and pantries stuffed with nuts beans and peas.

Bryan Visitors, Illnesses Highlight Local Notes

Marshall Peters of Navasota is recovering at home from malaria fever and plans to return to work this week. Abilene visitors Mr. and Mrs. Henry James and son stayed with Mrs. C. F. Moore on East 25th street before returning home. Mrs. E. W. Crenshaw visited Houston with her mother Mrs. M. K. Goodson. Roger Herring underwent appendicitis surgery at a local clinic and rests comfortably. Herman V. Harlan traveled to Houston on business.

Money Set Aside For Hiway 21 In Burleson Co

Reports from Caldwell say the State Highway Commission has appropriated 151000 for grading and permanent bridges on Highway 21 from Brazos river through Burleson county to Lincoln on the Lee county line. This secures a new Burleson county route due to the Brazos bridge location and strengthens the all weather Bry an to state capital link.

Good Will Trip to Iola Proves Best Yet

The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce praised the Iola goodwill trip for its large turnout and successful combined band concert. W R McCullough noted Bryan residents attended more than on previous trips, and after the concert Nall Colson introduced several candidates before a watermelon social.

Taxpayers urged to back uniform budget law in East Texas

About 80 representatives from 12 District 6 counties met in City Hall to discuss the uniform budget law. C A Jay of Dallas urged taxpayer involvement to curb public expenditures while Curtis Morris outlined tax survey work and the need to collect delinquent taxes.

City lights rate cut by Bryan after Friday vote

Bryan city commission approved a lower commercial lighting tariff to take effect at month start. The plan lowers charges to 12 cents per kWh for the first 50 kWh, 10 cents for the next 50, and 8 cents for all additional usage, down from 14, 12 and 10 cents respectively.

Educational Sessions to Feature Brazos County Free Fair

Brazos County Free Fair directors announce an October plan adding a large educational tent with seating for 500 or more. The tent will host demonstrations and talks on home and farm improvement led by county agents, health department staff, and home demonstration agents. When not in use for demonstrations moving pictures will be shown.

Mule Stops Work At Dinner Horn After Fifteen Years

NACOGDOCHES July 7. W A Cureton a Swift community farmer owns a mule he has plowed with for fifteen years. Each day at 11 30 Mrs Cureton blows the dinner horn and the mule stops plowing and goes to the house. Old Beck refuses to move if Cureton is in the field so he unhooks and leads the animal to the house rather than ride it.

Funeral Service Held for Aged Kurten Man

John L. Valenta 76, a Brazos county resident who came from Czecho Slova ki at 14, died Thursday at his Kurten home after a brief illness. Services were held Friday in Kurten with Rev. C B Thompson officiating and at North Zulch at 4 p m. Mc Culloch Dansby Co. directed the funeral. Surviving: wife Josephine. son Frank L Valenta of Burten. daughters Mrs G M Utecht of Houston and Mrs D Olson of Chicago and Mrs W F Barton of San Angelo. one brother Joe Valenta of North Zulch.

Drilling On Well At Iola Makes Much Progress

J. C. Barnett Dobbs No. 1 oil well three miles west of Iola added another shift of men Friday and drilling is now being carried on both day and night. Much progress has been noted with sands showing well.

New City Well Tested and Contractors Paid

The final test of the new city well was completed Friday and the city commission ordered final payment to Layne Texas Company. The test showed a capacity of about 115 gallons per minute and no bonus was earned.

Wharton Speaker For Homecoming At Independence

The Independence Homecoming Association announces Judge Clarence C. Wharton of Houston will be the guest speaker. The 1932 homecoming at Old Independence will be Sunday August 14 with a morning program and a fine musical lineup. President Gus A. District Winners Named in 4 H Bedroom Improvement Contest

District winners in the improved bedroom contest for 4 H Club girls were announced by Mrs. Bernice Claytor of Texas A and M College. A total of 602 district entrants from 52 counties and about 15 000 of 18 000 home demonstration girls participated. State honors will be chosen from district first placers at the July 25 to 30 short course, with a banquet for at least one victor from each county. A volunteer prize fund has been started by the G A Stowers Furniture Company for state winners. District winners include Alice Hunter Margaret Foard county and Leola Foggy Bushland Potter county in District 1 and Alta Lloyd Floydada Floyd county in District 2, among others.

Garner Plans Fishing Trip After Adjourning Congress

Washington July 13 Speaker John N Garner says he will take three weeks of rest after Congress adjourns before resuming campaign activities. He plans to avoid visitors and correspondence, preferring fishing in Texas and recuperation before meeting with Roosevelt in Albany on later campaign matters.

Revival Service Begins in Kurten by Baptists

Rev. C. B. Thompson, formerly of Bryan and former pastor at North Zulch Free Will Baptist, started revival services at Kurten that will continue through next Sunday. Services are at 10 30 a m and 8 30 p m each day inviting all to attend.

School Transfers Of Rural Pupils Closed August

County school superintendent Mrs D J McDonald orders all rural pupil transfers to rural or city schools completed by August 1. Transfers of older students to the Bryan high school may occur after that date but should be considered before month’s end.

Barbecue and Dance at Parker's Store for St. Anthony's

A community festival at Parker's Store, July 16 and 17, funds St. Anthony's church. A Saturday 8 p.m. dance at the school house kicks off the event, followed by a Sunday noon barbecue on church grounds where political candidates are invited to speak and all are welcome.

Anti Malaria Campaign Demonstrations Complete in Brazos County

The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce reports four Brazos county demonstrations led by H. C. Wilson have ended. Homes on Leonard Road near Bryan Millican Kurten Road and Edge showcased papering and screening to curb mosquitoes and flies. Three sanitary pit toilets will be installed by owners, with no cost to residents, benefiting health education efforts.

Donley Farmers Plan to Barter Big Food Crops

Clarendon July 13. Donley county farmers will barter and market goods as part of a campaign led by county agent G. L. Boykin. With over 4000 acres in gardens and recent rains boosting crops, a large canning program runs alongside a regional advertising drive from Garden City Kansas to Quanah Texas. The plan includes bartering with wheat growers to secure flour for winter.

Florida businessman reports improving conditions in Florida and East

Geo R Branch of Miami arrived in Bryan from New York and Chicago after a business trip. He visits Mrs Branch and the Buchanans on West 24th street and plans a brief Teague visit with his father. He is an official with the Florida East Coast railroad and says business is improving along the Atlantic Coast and in eastern cities.

Panhandle Potatoes Show Oddities with Seeds

TOHOKA July 13 The Panhandle's 1932 Irish potato crop yields unusual results with plants bearing seed pods instead of above ground plants. A Clarendon gardener reports potatoes sprouting from eyes without stems, while F L Willingham of Tohoka notes two plants producing unusually large pale blossoms and seed pods.

Funeral Service on Monday for Bryan Builder

E. D. Phillips aged 62 years 9 months 25 days died at home after several weeks illness. He moved to Bryan twelve years ago from Navasota and worked as contractor builder and house mover. He was a First Baptist member with pastor Rev Jno L Wharton conducting the service at Mc Culloch Dansby chapel and burial in Bryan city cemetery. Survived by wife two sons Robert and Tom both of Bryan one step daughter Mrs S E Peckham Bryan two stepsons W H Robertson and A J Robertson Bryan. Home Destroyed By Flames Early Tuesday Morning

The home of Dean Osborn on Antoine Street was destroyed by fire early Tuesday. The alarm came in at 1 20 am and the family escaped with few possessions. Osborn reported $500 insurance on furnishings and $1 500 on the house.
