Houstonian Hurt In Fall From Building At A M College

Theodore Smith a Houston stone setter working on the Petroleum Engineering building at A and M College fell from the structure shortly after noon Thursday. He was brought to Bryan hospital with internal injuries and is reported to be improving though the injuries were serious. Smith was employed by W E Giordano Company stone setting sub contractors of Houston.

Death of Mother Calls Bryan Man To Hearne Home

Lee Viviano, an employee of Mc Culloch-Dansby Company, was called to Hearne Sunday due to the critical illness and death of his mother Mrs. Louise Viviano, who died at the family home Sunday night at 9. Funeral services were held at the family home in Hearne and at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bryan with Rev. Brain of St. Anthonys officiating. Interment followed in Hearne Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons Phillip Viviano, Paul L. Viviano, Tony Ottea, Lee F. Viviano, Marion Ottea and Charles Morello. Survived by husband Paul Viviano, three sons John, Frank Viviano, Lee Viviano, and daughter Mrs Katherine Valpe.

Negro Sought in Navasota Shooting Case

Sheriff H Reed aided by Constable Bailey in pursuing a nameless negro suspected of fatally shooting a man in Navasota last night. The suspect reportedly headed toward Bryan. search parties encountered no trace near Wellborn and no details on the killing were learned.

Stanford to Speak at Houston Methodist Banquet Tonight

J. and Stanford, former president Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce, will keynote the First Methodist Church men’s monthly meeting in Houston. The talk is at 6 30 tonight in the church banquet hall, with Stanford traveling from Austin after a Monday morning stop and returning to Austin afterward.

A copy of the Galveston Tri-Weekly News dated July 26 1865 is in the possession of Tyler Haswell. It was given by John M Acker man of Navasota former representative of the 26th district. The paper carries an ad for George D Haswell late Haswell Bros commission merchant and receiving and forwarding promptly attended to Millican Texas.

Orange residents struggle with old large size dollars as they pay taxes. Clerks initially refuse the oversized currency in some stores while tax collection continues. A woman turned 50 of the odd bills to the collector for tax payment.

Higher Wool Prices Expected for Spring in West Texas

J M Lee of Dra per and Company told Sutton county ranchmen that spring wool prices should rise by 6 to 12 cents from 1932 levels. The firm offered to advance up to 50 cents per head on spring wool, with contracts available now or on consignments. Crockett county shearing contracts were set at 6 cents per head for 12 month wool and 5 cents for 6 month wool.

Bishop Quin criticizes profit motive at Chamber dinner

Bishop Clinton S. Quin of Houston urged abandoning the profit motive and adopting a plan to prevent a recurrence of economic low mood and unemployment during a Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce dinner. Cattle tax cut in Brazos County halves levy

Brazos County commissioners cut the tax per head on cattle from 10 to 5 dollars including calves. About 20 000 cattle will be listed for taxation this year, aiming to tax every head after an anti tick campaign showed 40 000 cattle in the county. Judge A S McSwain said the effort seeks an equitable distribution of the tax burden.

The census bureau reported today that cotton of the 1982 crop ginned before January 16 totaled 12,408,310 running bales. Texas contributed 4,166,715 bales and Louisiana 598,018 bales.

Jumping Events Highlight A M College Horse Show

Jumping events are set for Saturday at 1 30 o'clock in the annual mid winter horse show at Texas A and M College. The military detachment sponsors the program with five of fourteen classes featuring jumping. Open events include touch and out pair and open jumping while enlisted men events are limited to the detachments personnel.

Three Injured Women Reported After Farmhouse Attack

Four persons were beaten at a farm home six miles north of Lufkin by a neighbor armed with a hammer. Mrs Roberta McCall and daughter Sallie 30 were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. F L McCall husband and father was struck on the head. Mrs N J Looney McCalls mother suffered broken fingers and head blows. Mrs McCall was robbed. The assailant attacked the others afterward.

Orchard Pruning Demonstration At Stewart Home

County Agent C. L. Benson led a pruning demonstration for Prospect area homeowners at the Stewart home Tuesday afternoon. He urged balanced trees for easy spraying and picking and advised planting trees with a southward lean. Eleven trees were pruned and one planted including peach pear and apple. Stewart and wife showcased fruit trees and nuts for future use as the club notes new member Mrs Ance Duncan.

Editor of Bryan to be honored by Baylor group

Mrs Lee J Rountree and Miss Ruby Morrow were invited to attend the Matrix Table marking the tenth anniversary of Baylor College Belton's Journalism Department. The event Saturday evening January 28 is sponsored by Theta Sigma Phi. Rountree will be initiated into the sorority. Morrow is already a member.

Baptist Training Service Study Course Planned

A week long Baptist Training Service study course is set for January 30 to February 3 at First Baptist Bryan. Each evening at 7 o clock classes run two 45 minute periods with a refreshment break hosted by the Women’s Missionary Society. Dr. W. H. Andrew leads the Plan of Salvation with the pastor also teaching.

Martin Named President of Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance

J D Martin of Bryan and Dan Scoates of College Station return from Dallas where Mr Martin was elected president and Mr Scoates a director of the Texas Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Mr Martin is a past president of the association. They were accompanied by Mrs Martin, Mrs Scoates and daughters, and Mrs Cliff Buchanan.
