Death of Mother Calls Bryan Man To Hearne Home

Jee Viviano of Mc Culloch-Dansby Co. rushed to Hearne Sunday due to his mother Mrs Louise Viviano’s critical illness and death. The 76 year old Italy-born widow had lived in Hearne 32 years and died at home Sunday night. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. at the family home and 3 p.m. at St Marys Catholic Church Bryan with Rev B Brain of St Anthonys Bryan officiating. Interment was in Hearne Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons Phillip Viviano Paul L Viviano Tony Ottea Lee F Viviano Marion Ottea and Charles Morello. She is survived by husband Paul, three sons John Frank Viviano Hearne Lee Viviano Bryan and daughter Katherine Valpe Los Angeles.

Chamber of Commerce names acting secretary and board changes

J E Stanford was named acting secretary of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce to replace W R McCullough who resigned to focus on other duties. McCullough was placed on the board to fill the vacancy from W J Wimberly, who left due to business demands. A five member committee led by President J F Casey will outline duties and pursue full time staffing for the secretary. Directors present included Bolton, Bryan, Casey, Dulaney, Edge, Howell, Johnson, Karper, S E Martin, Russell, McQuillen, Walker, Sullivan, Walton, and Weddington, with regrets over Major L L Meinnis death adopted.

Negro Sought in Navasota Shooting

Sheriff J L Reed and Constable Bailey aided in a search for an unidentified Black man believed to have killed another man in Navasota with a shotgun. The fugitives headed toward Bryan after the incident. Authorities found no trace near Wellborn and had no further details.

Stanford to Speak at Methodist Banquet in Houston

J. B. Stanford former president Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will be principal speaker at the First Methodist Church Houston monthly men’s dinner tonight at 6 30 in the church banquet hall. He left Bryan for Austin on Monday morning and will drive to Houston from Austin. After his address he will return to Austin and not come back to Bryan until Friday.

Old Galveston paper carries Haswell ad

A Galveston Tri-Weekly News issue dated July 26, 1865, about 18 inches long and printed on four parchment sheets, is owned by Tyler Haswell who received it from John M. Acker of Navasota, a former 26th district representative. The ad reads George D. Haswell Late Haswell Bros Commission Merchant and Receiving and Forwarding promptly attended to Millican Texas.

J M Lee of Dra ger and Company told Sutton county ranchmen spring wool prices should rise about 12 cents above 1932 levels. The Boston wool house offered to advance up to 50 cents per head on spring wool, contracts now or on consign ment. Crockett county shearing contracts are 6 cents per head for 12 month wool and 5 cents for 6 month wool.

Brazos County Slashes Cattle Tax Per Head

Brazos county commissioners cut the cattle tax from 10 to 5 dollars per head in a call session. Calves are to be taxed for the first time, aiming to tax every hoof and reduce individual burdens. Judge A S McSwain said the aim is to list every hoof for taxation.

Census bureau reports the 1932 cotton crop ginned before January 16 at 12,408,310 running bales with 666,003 round bales counted as half bales and 7,402 American Egyptian. Texas contributed 4,166,715 bales and Louisiana 598,018 bales.

Woman robbed as four beaten at farm home near Lufkin

Four persons were assaulted by a neighbor six miles north of Lufkin. Mrs Roberta McCall and daughter Sallie were hospitalised with serious injuries. F L McCall, husband and father, suffered head injuries. Mrs N J Looney, McCall’s mother in law, had broken fingers and head blows. Mrs McCall was robbed during the attack.

County Agent C L Benson spoke to Prospect homeowners at the orchard demonstration hosted by Mr and Mrs J R Stewart. He noted pruning balances a tree for easy spraying and picking and advised planting with a southward lean for a straighter trunk. Sixteen trees were pruned including peach, pear and apple. fruiting stock and ornamentals were planted by the Stewarts.

Bryan volunteer firemen held their annual banquet where two members from the two companies tied for first in the attendance contest. Fire Chief C Griesser oversaw the toast, noting the contest would continue next year and the banquet would recur.
