Five Fire Alarms In Three Days Hit Bryan

Five fires within Bryan over the weekend prompted runs by the City Volunteer Fire Department led by Fire Marshal J. Z. Ramsey. Fires included a flue blaze at Clem Beale on East 26th Street with minor wall damage and several other small blazes with little damage overall. A sprinkler system pipe burst at Howell & Co. caused water damage, but no injuries were reported.

A Dallas fire on Thursday damaged a building housing a car rental business. The blaze destroyed 40 to 50 autos, with losses pegged around 100000 dollars. Three men were injured and the cause remained undetermined.

Three City Charter Amendments Fail In Heavy Vote

In a frigid December election 294 residents cast ballots as three city charter amendments were defeated. Mat Merka Killed at Bryan Cotton Oil Mill

A mill accident at Bryan Cotton Oil Mill fatally injures Mat Merka. He was found unconscious about 10:30 a.m. and died at Bryan Hospital at 12:20 p.m. from brain concussion and chest injuries. Authorities suggest his clothing may have caught on a drive shaft triggering the accident. His father John Merka of Reliance and his wife were summoned to the hospital.
