Cold snap end slows as Midwest relief forecast

The Associated Press reports partial relief from sub zero cold in the Middle West with lower temps expected in the East and West. Eleven deaths blamed on the cold include four in Chicago, three in Ohio, two in Oregon and one each in Texas and California amid crop damage from frost.

Holy Door Opens Jubilee Year In Rome

Streams of faithful continue to pass through the Holy Door in Saint Peter's opened by Pope Pius on Christmas Eve. About 60,000 visitors were counted at the shrine on Christmas Day marking the Year of Jubilee.

White Gifts for the King postponed and moved to next Sunday

The First Christian church postponed exercises due to cold weather last Sunday. The White Gifts for the King program will be next Sunday evening at 6 30. Wedding Postponed After Bride’s Relative Dies

The wedding of Miss Lena Denena and Lee J. Court, originally set for Sunday December 28, is postponed to possibly early spring after the death of Sam J. Palatosa, uncle of the bride. Relatives in Bryan received the telegram this morning as plans for a lavish ceremony and dinner were underway. Mr and Mrs Albert Goodman visited relatives in Franklin for Christmas Day.

Methodist Women Plan Erect Building on Mount Sequoyah

Southern Methodist women from 12 conferences west of the Mississippi plan a $25 000 building on the Western Methodist Assembly grounds at Mount Sequoyah Arkansas The initial 1000 is raised by the Little Rock Conference and the rest by other conferences including four in Texas Arkansas Oklahoma Missouri and Louisiana A campaign will be started early next year approved by the women's missionary council and the board of missions. The building aims to be a bright addition to the vacation center and will serve as a meeting place for conference committees and mission boards. Babbs Switch tragedy deaths mourned at memorial service

Palasota 34 Dies. Body Arrives Bryan for Funeral

Sam J. Palasota aged 34 died Christmas Day morning of pneumonia after influenza at a San Angelo hospital. Traveling salesman for Western Distributing Co. his body arrives in Bryan on I.G.N. on Christmas afternoon and is taken to his parents home for prayers Saturday before 2 pm funeral at St. Anthony's Church. John Hubacek Wins Grand Prize in Crow-Shoot Contest

John Hubacek of College Station won the grand prize of 10 dollars in gold in the Crow-Shoot contest held by Parker-Astin Hardware Company. He tallied 100 birds with a 510-point score, including 40 crows 25 owls and 35 hawks. Second place went to Wiley Conway of Reliance who collected 104 birds for 316 points. Edward Schultz of Reliance took third with 78 birds and 299 points.

Muck Dam Break Flood Kills Thirteen in Saltville

In Saltville Virginia the Holston River valley flood from the Mathieson Alkali Works dam broke Wednesday. Nine bodies recovered with thirteen known dead. seven still missing and over twenty injured in nearby hospitals. John Goforth of Richmond among the deceased.

Muck Dow disaster toll rising near Saltville Virginia

Twenty three people are dead and fourteen injured, with five bodies recovered, after the Muck Dow breach across the Holston River last Wednesday night. Sheriff John Liteon of Abington, Virginia, reported to the Associated Press.

Five Die and 200 Homeless After Dam Break at Methieson Alkali Works

In Abingdon Virginia five people are reported dead and about 200 homeless as the Muck Dam broke at the Methieson Alkali Works on the North Fork of the Holston River. The cause remains undetermined and five bodies recovered have not been identified. Saltville reports hospital and homes crowded with victims seeking shelter.

Milton Henry Hall once famed blackface minstrel and writer of Down Where the Cotton Blossoms Grow and Cuban Star March was buried in Denver on Christmas Eve with four mourners. He spent his last twelve years as a dishwasher in a Denver hotel and died Monday in General Hospital. Few at the hospital knew his early career until burial revealed his identity. he had been a friend of Lew Dockstader and Al G. Fields.

Landmark Hotel of West Texas Destroyed by Fire

Stamford residents searched the ruins of the three story Landmark Hotel of West Texas after a Wednesday night blaze that swept the building. One man and two children were reported missing along with five residences. Cotton buyer E. V. Lothpiech and two Winters children were seriously injured and also reported missing.

Woman’s plucky battle ends in owl’s death near South Bend

In Tacoma on December 2, Mrs. W. A. Wilson of a ranch near South Bend captured a large horned owl that had been preying on poultry and game. She clung to the bird despite wounds from talons and beak. her husband returned and killed the marauder. The owl measured four feet five inches across the wings.

Lorena Man Fatally Injured in Train Collision Near Waco

Negro communities busy canning beef under Agent Nash

Beef canning is under way in most negro communities of the county said L A Nash negro county agent today. He noted that on Friday eight families of the Post Oak community three miles west of Bryan put up 250 cans of beef including steak stew and chili varieties. On Thursday the Walker community nine miles from Bryan near Benchley, helped by Post Oak, produced over 200 cans under Nash's direction.

Augustine Romeriz aged 2 years 2 months and 24 days died at home on Saturday night after a week's illness. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon and at St. Joseph's church, with burial in the city cemetery. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Romeriz. Bryney Mitchell aged 90, longtime Benchley resident and Ireland native, died Saturday night. He was buried Sunday at 3 p.m. in the local cemetery. No known surviving relatives. in his later years he was a ward of neighbors. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Mc Lulloch Gordon Co.
