Eliot tribute praises physicians at society banquet

Dr. Charles W. Eliot lauded the medical profession for curing and preventing disease and uplifting public morals. He stated the profession serves society more than any other and affects every department of human activity during the Massachusetts Medical Society annual banquet at Copley Plaza last evening.

Changes in medical education praised and debated at convention

Dr Eliot recalled 1855 56 Harvard teaching methods noting lack of written exams due to students' illiteracy. He urged sensory education and skill acquisition. Banquet attendance reached 1300 as the convention closed. President Bowers criticized lay loyalty to incompetent physicians and urged more endowments for medical schools. Notables OBrien Stockton and Gibbon spoke on closer ties between medicine and press. Officers reelected including Bowers as president and Jones Burrage Buckingham Brig ham.

C E Turner Dies at 90 East Boston Resident

Charles Eliott Turner 90 longtime East Boston resident died at his home 471 Saratoga Street after a long illness. Born in the North End in 1823 he lived in East Boston more than 50 years. He served as truant officer 35 years resigned five years ago. A former Boston police officer and Station 7 lieutenant he also was a fire department captain. He leaves a son Edward chief building inspector and two daughters. He was a widower.

Said Halim Named Grand Vizier Ad Interim

June 11 Constantinople report says Mahmoud Shefket Pasha grand vizier and minister of war was shot and killed by assassins. His aide de camp Lieutenant Ibrahim Bey also died. Prince Said Halim foreign minister and ex president of the Council of State named grand vizier ad interim as other ministers keep their posts.

Assassination of Grand Vizier Said in Turkish Capital

An official account describes the assassination of the grand vizier after leaving the ministry of war. Shots were fired at his car near Bayezid and Divan Yolu, killing him and lieutenant Ibrahim Bey. Topal Tewfik was arrested with two revolvers. the assassins fled, and the motor car was later found with its owner in custody.

Haverhill Man Dies Suddenl y in Florida

Charles W. Morse aged 60 of Haverhill Mass president of the Gainesville Gas Electric Power Company and involved with several eastern utilities died suddenly today in a local hotel from cirrhosis of the liver. Accompanied by Mrs Morse the body was sent to Haverhill.

Navy Yard Workers Meet Daniels Over Pay and Representation

Two hundred Atlantic coast navy yard employees met Secretary Daniels at the Navy Department to press grievances on scientific management and wage uniformity. They urged representation on the wage board, while Daniels warned he would not commit to civilian employee representation. He noted Congress requires equal private sector pay for navy crafts and highlighted Norfolk workers earning less than Philadelphia workers for the same grade. Representatives came from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Newport, Annapolis, Norfolk, Charleston, D. C., and Washington.
