London June 10 The House of Commons passed the second reading of the Ireland home rule bill without division with 368 to 270. Supporters cheered as opponents warned of civil war if enacted. Sir Edward Carson, Irish Unionist leader, declared the bill would heighten tensions.
Lord Beresford vows to back Ulster resistance while Sir Edward Carson warns troops cannot settle the Irish question. Redmond insists twenty four counties will not be intimidated as the bill advances to the Lords with possible amendments. Bonar Law hints at a bargain with Nationalists, Asquith denies it, and the Balfour amendment fails as the bill clears the second reading.
