In New York on July 27 striking tailors and their allied contractors press for union action. They threaten to settle with nonunion small contractors individually if they fail to attract all small contractors to join the union. A conference ends with a pledge to defer separate settlements as the union seeks broader participation.

Lynn Strikers Win A Point In Lynn Factory Row

In Fall River twenty nine New York and Brooklyn workers were sent home by the Plant Company dispute. Wasters Union agent Fred S. Carter aided their return, while non union contingents were expected from Maine and elsewhere. Plant plans a manifesto denying a lockout and cites a move to weekly pay rather than piece work. A union meeting and a proposed 10 cent weekly assessment aim to fund continued action.

Labor Day Marshal Named By Joint Labor Body

John Hurley of the Knights of Labor was elected chief marshal for Labor Day by the three large labor groups. He appointed Fred Kneeland of the Building Trades Council as chief of staff. The Knights retain the right of line per established custom. The Master Builders' Association faced strong criticism from Carpenters' and Joiners' No. 23 at Dexter Hall for refusing dialogue with the Building Trades Council, condemned as fueling war rather than peace.

Early Closing of Bakeshops and Union Actions Debate

The Building Trades endorsed the move toward arbitration and conciliation. The Journeymen Bakers No 182 elected Jacob Rheinstadter delegate to the International Bakers convention at Evansville Indiana in October. Mr Balam of Cigarmakers Union spoke as fifteen new members joined. The committee reported more firms joined the early closing effort and proposed mass meetings in Cambridge Somerville and East Boston to promote organization and early closing.

Knights of Labor Assembly Votes on Labor Day Funds

At the regular meeting of R. of L. Ben Franklin Assembly No. 5463 five new propositions were received six reinstatements and five initiated. The picnic committee treasurer reported all bills paid and 509 dollars added to the treasury. The assembly passed a resolution that city money for Labor Day should be given to labor organizations and to them only.

Newton city officials in special session approve $4500 for furnishing the new Pierce school, $500 for Newtonville high school furniture removal, and other measures. They set Sept 8 hearings on turnout locations for Walnut Street and Centre Street widening, street railway franchise issues, and a main sewer on Austin Street.

Watertown Sewers Awards Declared by Board of Selectmen

The Watertown board of selectmen through the sewer sub committee announced awards for sewer materials. W. H. Pevear & Co. will supply 250000 hard burned brick at 8.50 per 1000, 760 barrels Rosendale cement at 1.00, H. A. George & Co. 20 barrels Portland cement at 2.07, and manhole sets to Waltham Iron Company at 7 per set. The sewer pipe contract was not awarded.

Missing Cambridge Man Traced To Boston Search

J A Morrison, a conductor on the West End railroad living at 4 Ringgold street Boston, reports to Cambridge police that Charles Clark is missing for eight weeks. Last heard he was working in Cambridge. Clark, a Nova Scotia native, had worked in Lewiston Maine before two months ago. He came to Boston seeking work. his wife and two children have returned to Nova Scotia.

Fined for Selling Liquor in Gloucester Police Court

In Gloucester on July 27 Carl J. Smith was fined $100 for keeping a liquor nuisance. Jeremiah J. Bulkley also received a $100 fine and three months in the House of Correction. Both appealed and were held in jail.

Fire in Gar Shops at Prison Point

More than 2500 residents watched a blaze in the Boston and Maine railroad car shops at Prison Point last evening. The fire started around 7:30 in the second floor paint shop in a corrugated iron building, with two alarms from Box 118 Somerville and Box 419 Charlestown. Firefighters contained the flames. losses likely under $1000, with probable cause listed as spontaneous combustion.

Terrier Guards Dead Pug On Smithfield Street

A terrier stood vigil as a dead pug lay on Smithfield Street near the Volksblatt office all evening. The dog barked at passersby to deter disturbance, chased bootblacks and newsboys, and even dragged the body away from a car rail after a wagon clipped it. Still under fire in Davis Com A conspiracy case

Judge Dewey continued the case of H A Davis H C Hathaway and Lindsey Oliver charged with conspiracy to defraud creditors. Witness William Mee testified about irregular transfers of bills of lading and unentered shipments including 10 000 cigars. He noted meetings among the three defendants in November at Davis shop. Ordered Bill Paid In Lynn Sanitation Dispute

At a Lynn school committee meeting the Huey Bros. Boston engineers bill for 99.95 was excluded from the approved list because the finance committee had not initially approved it. The panel cited a $14,000 overrun on teachers' salaries and decided to approve only bills from local firms. The finance committee was later instructed to approve the bill, and the board upheld it with the other bills.

Teamster's Serious Fall on Boylston Street

William Gider a teamster living on Fellows street and employed by P Downey was thrown from a wagon after a collision on Boylston street near Washington street. The wagon ran over his right arm chest and face breaking four ribs and dislocating his right shoulder. He is in critical condition at the Emergency Hospital.

A thief captured on Jackson Street confessed at Central Station, revealing a room at the Queen Hotel filled with goods valued around 3000 dollars. South Boston branch of the Irish National Federation, chaired by Edward Tracey, voted to hold a public meeting Monday at 8 p m in St Augustine's Hall to elect delegates to the Irish national convention in Dublin on September 1.
