At a national service in the Asbury Park Auditorium Bishop John P. Newman denounced the Populists as no better than anarchists and not good citizens. A heckler shouted that Bryan was a good American as the crowd drowned him with choir music.
The Herbert Fuller crew is on the steamer Olivette sailing from Halifax at 2 am to be handed to U S authorities on arrival in Boston Harbor. Thompson, struck by a paddle wheel, died. Tubman fought waves, secured a rope and was hauled aboard alive. The voyage continued to Plymouth with many passengers affected by the tragedy.
Major McKinley and Mark Hanna held talks at Hanna’s lakefront home on campaign strategy. Sherman warned of rising silver sentiment and urged immediate stump speeches and bold money-question messaging. The plan calls for broad, concise talks and leaflets instead of lengthy documents, with the acceptance letter drafted but not released for about a month.
