Protest by Accused Men Against Indictment in North American Rubber Case

Warren B Wheeler Stillman Shaw and J Alden Whitmore challenged the indictment for fraudulent use of the mails in a hearing before United States Circuit Judge Frederic Dodge. They allege irregular proceedings and claim constitutional rights violations over compelled disclosure of private books. Assistant DA Garland argues the surrendered papers were not used before the grand jury. Judge Dodge took the matter under advisement.

Local Boy Claims $35500 Found at Rail Tracks

Brayton Gardner, 18, told police he found a leather bag containing 35500 on the Boston and Maine tracks in North Adams. He refused to reveal the hiding place and said he would produce the money if claimed. Only he reportedly saw the cash.

Young Gardner turned up at a newspaper office placing a classified ad offering a reward for the owner of $35,000 found on the Boston and Maine tracks. Rich Weymouth quarryman given 30 days jail term

Joseph E. Miller a prominent Weymouth quarryman was sentenced by Judge Pratt in Hingham District Court to 30 days in Plymouth jail for operating his auto under the influence. He left with Deputy Charles Spring and posted a $500 bond for the October term after a telegram ordered a job in Newport Rhode Island ahead of appeal.

Disputed Report on New England Railway Mail Superintendent

Lexington July 14 The local office of the United States Post Office Department opened in its new quarters at 428 Massachusetts avenue at 6 30 this morning. James Morrissey of 18 Hancock street assisted postmaster duties. Philip Nelles of 69 Hancock street a Lexington High School sophomore made the first money order purchase for Chicago. Charles F. Spaulding of 23 Waltham street owner of the Lexington Grain Company was first to call for mail at the new office, arriving at 6 45.

Alaska Development Bill Backed by Senator Poindexter

Senator Miles Poindexter of Washington has introduced in the Senate a bill to develop Alaska. The measure was drawn up by Cambridge man James Mackaye, brother of the dramatist Perey Mackaye, and Poindexter champions its passage.

Government runs rails and mines as public service

The proposal would have the federal government operate all public utilities and half the coal mines in Alaska, with annual dividends split between employees and coal or railroad customers. It envisions government operation of railroads telegraph and telephone lines, private lease on half the mines under equal labor and safety terms, and profits shared with workers and users.

Boston Man In Dire Plight In Maine

George P. King of Boston was arrested in the Municipal Court rooms by Deputy Sheriff Thomas Cullinan Jr. on unlawful possession of liquors in York county after being found guilty of illegal transportation of intoxicating liquors in this county. The case concerns a motor truck load of whiskey seized at Wales en route from Boston to Augusta.

Dentist Slew by Peculiar Eye Injury in Chicago

In Chicago on July 4 a speck of enamel from a dentist's drill struck Dr. Leroy Kerr in the eye. The speck carried diphtheria germs and, to save his life, doctors advised removing the optic. Graves’ Grain Alcohol advertised as exceptional household quality.
