Mr and Mrs Averill V Tillbury of Lynn were rescued after five hours marooned on an island when a large turtle pulled their boat from shore and let it drift away near Harvey Lake Inn Northwood Centre New Hampshire on July 14.

Island Escape In Tense Boat Chase And Rescue

After a failed attempt to release a rope and drop toward safety they climbed the bank into trees. A turtle headed for the water with rope still attached as Tillbury, Bunker, and Ivory Brown scrambled to reach another boat. Darkness and a distress flag followed until a rescue clarified a bridge route to the mainland.

Old whaler William A Grozier wrecked at sea

The whaling schooner William A Grozier of New Bedford lineage, 16 tons gross, 111 net, was wrecked around July 1 after departing June 1 with nine crew. Captain Oliveira’s steamer Osage rescued the crew. cause believed to be a sudden storm. Built 1865 in Kennebunk Maine, the vessel had recently operated in the Cape Verde packet trade under Captain G Roberts.

Suicide believed in Charles River death of Andrew Bailas

Ill health is cited as the motive for Andrew Bailas who disappeared from 303 Cambridge Street West End. Relatives say he committed suicide by drowning in the Charles River. A coat and straw hat found on a West Boston bridge pillar were identified as his. The Metropolitan Park police searched the river for hours but the body had not been recovered. Bailas, 49, described as 5 feet 9 inches, 190 pounds with dark complexion and a black mustache, wore a gray mixed suit and straw hat.

Dedham Man Fatally Hurt In Auto Crash Near Marlboro

Dedham carpenter Newton Jonah, 57, of 7 Walnut Street, is dying at Marlboro Hospital after the car he rode in rolled on the Northboro road when rear tires burst. Car owner Charles Macomber, 132 Walnut Street, suffers a scalp wound and hand injuries but left the hospital. the car was wrecked.

First public passenger elevator license issued in city

J Edward Murray Jr longtime president of the Elevator Operators and Porters Union received the first public license to operate a passenger elevator in the city from the building commissioner. He received the pen Governor Foss used to sign the new licensing bill, with license No 2 after John Edward Fleming who holds No 1. The license requires a satisfactory examination at the building commissioner’s office for all public building elevator operators.

Carders and Weavers Strike for Increase in Woonsocket

In Woonsocket R I on July 14 170 weavers at Hamlet Mills struck after management refused their demand for 50 cents per cut in crease and uniform cut lengths. The plant with 300 operatives saw four new workers and one striker back to work as the dispute continues. Thirty six carders at River Spinning Company mills struck Friday seeking higher wages from 12 dollars per week. The strikers state they are not part of a larger labor organization.
