County Will Vote On Tax Millage
Tren River county voters will go to the polls July 7 to approve or reject a proposal that taxes the increased three mills for county purposes for the next three years. The additional revenue is needed to meet the cost of administering relief to needy persons. If the measure is approved by three fifths, it would add $60,000 a year to the sum raised for county purposes during 1940 and 1941—a total of $180,000. At present the county government receives eight mills of the 15 mills allowed, and this year’s levy was about $170,000 based on a total valuation over $23,000,000. Escanaba Unusual interest in the forthcoming visit of Detroit Board of Commerce members Saturday, June 17, is shown by Upper Peninsula people, and many will journey to Escanaba June 16 and 17 for the combined meeting of the Upper Peninsula Development Bureau and the Detroiters.
