Supply and Demand Law Pushes 1968 Food Prices Higher
New York UPI reports food prices are inching up driven by the supply and demand balance. Forecasts from S Kent Christensen of the National Association of Food Chains project a 2.5 percent rise by election time and 3.5 to 4 percent for all of 1968 compared with 1967. He notes prices for staples like tomatoes peas and ground chuck have increased, while food-at-home costs have risen less than the overall price index. Overall, per capita supplies will be slightly lower as population grows, contributing to higher farm prices despite rising wages.
