Little Girl Fatally Mauled by Elephant at Vilas Park Zoo
A three year old girl, Ruth Ellen Freedman of Princeton, New Jersey, was fatally mauled by Winkie the Indian elephant at Madison Wisconsin's Vilas Park Zoo after slipping under a chicken wire fence. Witnesses and trainer Mel Bollig rushed to help as the elephant trampled the child while zoo director Alvie Nelson weighed options. Police in Chicago also note new city policing duties as hydrants and late sprinkling draw attention.
