Permit Okayed For Junkyard By Bennington Selectmen
Bennington selectmen, after a public hearing Tuesday night, reaffirmed a prior decision and granted Lloyd Bevins a town license for an automobile junkyard off Ore Bed Road. The hearing was the second on the license, following an earlier vote against it and a May 24 reconsideration. Attorneys for nearby property owners objected, arguing improper procedure and area impact.

Power Report Adopted By Legislative Council
The Vermont legislative council on Tuesday voted to adopt the Special Canadian Power Study Committee report 10 to 4. Debate centered on the panel’s recommendation to revoke the certificate of general good of the Vermont New England Power Co. and allow the Public Service Board broader power to buy and distribute power. Several senators criticized bias and arbitrariness while others urged accepting the report to seek lower rates. The session also noted Pownal eyesore concerns amid junkyard cleanup efforts and calls to strengthen local controls on dumps and scenery preservation to bolster industry and tourism.
