Vermont Balance Sheet: federal funds rise in 1965
UPI reports Senator George Aiken's annual Vermont balance sheet shows a 30 percent jump in the ratio of federal spending to taxes, with total federal outlays up to 182 million and taxes down to 112 million. The state’s national debt rose 7.8 percent to 571 million, signaling greater dependence on Washington and potential loss of autonomy. Military contracts, highway construction, and dairy price supports drove the gains, while tax cuts reduced income and employment tax receipts.
