Fatal Crash Probed In Bennington County
Dawn Annetta Howard 16 of Bennington survived a Saturday crash on Vermont Route 67A near Bennington College while Rene Edward Boutin Jr. 18 died at the scene after his 1959 Volkswagen hit a light pole. Investigators say skid marks suggest speed may have been a factor though the survivor cannot recall the crash. The incident marked the county’s first fatality this year. Boutin, a Bennington High School graduate and Vermont National Guard member, was employed at Warren Wire Co. in Pownal and attended St. Joseph College. The wreck blocked traffic until auxiliary state police assisted and the car was removed.

In Chicago the all white Gage Park neighborhood saw White mobs attack a march for open occupancy led by King supporters including priests and nuns. Rocks bricks and other projectiles were used as tensions flared injuring about 50 people while 17 arrests were reported amid cries of white power.

James S. Dennis Dies In Zurich Switzerland
James Shepard Dennis, 78, longtime Bennington civic leader and Fillmore Farms executive, died in Zurich, Switzerland after living in Santa Barbara. Born Oct 26, 1887 in Orange, N.J., he studied at Hill School, Princeton, and Harvard Law. Survived by wife Miriam Starr, two daughters, a sister, and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Bennington.
