Project VELA Unitform Seismology Effort Near Pentagon
In a red brick building near the Pentagon Bill Dean leads Teledyne scientists developing Project VELA Unitform a seismometer and computer system for rapid underground shock detection. The system, still in development, aims to identify natural tremors versus clandestine nuclear tests with speed from three to forty seconds and could aid arms control efforts while requiring on site inspections.
